When we had two cats I had one big litterbox and I scooped it twice a day and changed the litter once a week and it never smelt bad except on the last morning (phew!) Now we have three cats and it seems to have changed the litterbox dynamic considerably... we're going to have to shift to a five-day-rotation and use more litter in a month. Which is to be expected when you add a cat!

My questions are - how many cats do you have, and how many litterboxes? How often do you scoop the box/es, and how often do you change the litter? (also, what kind of litter do you use?)

I have just one cat, so one litterbox (uncovered, but I want to get a covered one eventually) and I use Feline Pine. I scoop the poop daily and since the tinkle makes the pellets breakdown to sawdust, it's only necessary to completely empty and refill once the pellets are all broken down. That takes about 2 weeks with my cat. I love this litter because there is no dust and combined with the fact that she eats a high quality food, no smell of the poop. She doesn't track the pellets, but she does toss pellets out of the box....grrrrrrrrrrr

I'm considering trying the Feline Pine. My cat is famous for kicking a pile of litter (seriously - a PILE) on the floor once a day. Very messy!! Knowing her, she wouldn't use the pine.

We have just one kitty (for the time being) and one fairly sized covered litter box. We use a plastic litter pan liner and scoop several times a day. Refill and change when necessary. The kitty litter we use is the deodorized/scented clumping kind (Fresh Step at the moment) but we also have a pack of plain litter pan deodorizer for emergencies :P

Feline Pine is a great cat litter for one or two cats... we used to use Yesterday's News but it got very stinky VERY quickly - the feline pine doesn't! Now we've got three cats it's not holding up as well and we're either going to have to start adding deoderiser (another stink) or change it twice a week instead of once...

3 beautiful burmese cats, all sadly still in England, but living in the lap of luxury there, so they're happy.

We have 2 large covered litter boxes with carbon filters in the top. Our vet said the general rule was that you should have the same number of boxes as cats. However, 99% of the time ours go outside as they have a catflap and free access to the garden whenever they want, so the boxes only really get used when it's cold or rainy and they dont want to go outside. We use regular sawdust and it works great, much cheaper than the clumping kind so it doesn't matter if you throw the whole contents out daily. It also smells really good. We used this also with them when they were kittens and were not allowed out. It probably had to be changed with the three of them 3 or 4 times a week, but like I said it was cheap so no problem. The one downside was that they tended to track it all around the house, but think that was more to do with the fact that they were babies and just jumped in and out between running madly around as they do at that age. :)

I have one beautiful black cat, who is so spoiled its not funny. He uses his cat litter box faithfully, and if there is more than 2 turds in the darn thing (a large uncovered) and he has to go potty then he will hold it and meow until you scoop them out.

We have two cats and two huge uncovered boxes, and we use regular clumping litter--used to be because one of our litter boxes was self-cleaning and you can't use any other kind with it, but it broke. So we just have high-sided uncovered ones now (our older cat won't use a covered one). The kitten (okay, so she's nearly 2 years old, but we still call her "the kitten") likes to get as much litter in as many places as possible, so it's probably 15-18" deep. (The box, not the litter!) Both boxes get scooped every other day and they get cleaned whenever they look like they need cleaning--not too often, in other words. And the area around them gets Dust-Busted a couple times a day.

Well, my lil kitty cat is now nearly 7 months old. We had just a standard uncovered litter box til a week ago, then we received the new u-beaut "purrforma", automatical kitty tray. Phoebe just loves it!!! You have to use premium clumping litter in it, but OMG what a diffrence this has made. No more smells, no more litter mess outside the box.

Phoebe was named after Phoebe from "Friends", because of her song "smelly cat" sung on the show,..because OMG, when we first got lil miss "phoebe", she was a smelly cat indeed. She currently having her lil moody swings because she's in her first season. It's kinda funny cause all my cats prior had been desexed and I had never seen this before. when she first started ,..I thought she had fallen off her kitty tree climber.......LOL....

We have 7 cats and 2 little boxes. We use clumping litter and clean them twice a day .

I bought one of those extra large automatic self-cleaning Petforma Litter boxes and let me tell ya what a waste of $200.00 There this metal rake thing thats supposed to rake the used litter across into a covered container after the cat leaves the box. The thing never worked right from the get go. It always got stuck halfway across and all ya would here is the motor grinding. VERY ANNOYING ! We actually cleaned it ourselves becuz it NEVER works. Finally one day the motor stopped running at all after only 2 months. So now its just a covered Giant non-motorized litter box that we still have to clean by hand.

Word of Advice: ]Don't waste your money on a Purforma Self-cleaning motorized litter box.
