Hi there,

I was just wondering, what are the realistic chances of getting my mexican girlfriend a B2 visa so she can visit me? She owns some land in mexico city, but her work is not really "steady" (promotional/modeling agency). She has family connections in Mexico City as well.

How difficult is this to pull off?

Chances of getting a B2 in Mexico are slim to none in reality but it could depend on how strong those family connections are. B2 applicants have to prove strong ties to the country and their intent to return. Part of that proof is money, bank account, steady work and a date they have to return to it, etc. Generally speaking, tourist visas are very difficult to get in Mexico.

If you intend to travel as a tourist, you should be able to explain and prove how and when you plan to travel, where you plan to stay, and how you will pay for the trip. United States law specifies that you should prove “that is it reasonable to suppose that you will return to your place of origin once you have completed your trip.” In order to comply with this requirement, it is suggested that you present original documents that support your claim of economic solvency. Depending on your particular situation, you may wish to present original, recent bank statements (letters from banks are not acceptable substitutes), receipts of payroll and the pink copy of the Social Security registration if you are employed, your stamped income tax return if you are a business owner, documentation regarding your business, your tax receipt if you own property, your professional I.D., etc. We reiterate: copies are neither acceptable nor necessary.

Thanks very much for your comments, that's basically how I thought it would be. Maybe I will have to find a job in Mexico.

kitkat gave you pretty much all of the info. all of the ppl i know from mexico with b2 visas have steady jobs.

one question to ponder would be what would be the ramifications be if she applied and was denied the tourist visa? Specifically, would it hinder any future visa application?

Another option would be for you to visit when you can. If you decide toget married, then file for k1 or k3/cr1 depending on how you want to handle it. it isn't the perfect answer but that is what a lot of ppl do.

I have some Mexican friends who were given visas to the U.S. (student and tourist). Neither own properties or had steady jobss at the time - they were college students. But, they both come from wealthy families.

As far as I know - it is very difficult.

My wife (then girlfriend) got a tourist visa to come here back in 2004 with no problems. She comes from a relatively poor family. The only thing she had to show that she had to return to Mexico was the fact that she was only 2 years into her 4 years college degree program. They gave her a tourist visa with very few questions asked. They didnt ask her anything at all about financial matters. She also took a letter with her that my parents had written and signed saying that they wanted to meet their son's girlfriend and show her around the States at Christmas. ;)

While there are definitely stories about people from Mexico being granted tourist visas, from speaking with people, I've gotten the sense that they are denied more often than approved.

I've had a B2 visa for as long as I can remember... and was never asked to show bank statements, proof of employment or the like. I even got it renewed after 9/11. My .02 to the original poster is to contact the Embassy and find out how the process is being handled now. Things may have changed.

Good luck, L.

It's a lot different for Mexicans...very few of them are granted tourist visas and they must prove a lot more than people from other countries.

Actually a while back on the US Embassy in Mexico's website it said that around 70% of Mexicans who applied for a tourist visa got one, so I wouldnt believe all the stories....

These days it's much harder than when people applied for them as a child and had the chance to renew every ten years. My niece-to-be was just denied. Her parents had to show bank statements, proof of their business and their property, her ties to the country (her school, community, etc) and considering she's a 14 her old student who needs to continue her education and has her entire family in Mexico, there would not normally be a question of her intent to stay in the US after a two week vacation to shop and see the country. All the paperwork was in order. She was still denied. They told her something like "this is not the time".

I think the 70% quote is highly, highly unlikely to be true, especially since the press release reflects 03-04.
