Greece didn't have the advantage of controlling it's own currency, which gives the US a major advantage.

It did until 2001.  I imagine their problems are rooted to an earlier time then when they joined the Eurozone.

...which is why it's even more baffling that the powers that be in the EU thought it was a good idea to put them on the Euro in the first place. Thankfully the fiat US dollar is what is currently keeping us from to have to worry about the national debt in the meantime. It's extremely concerning but we do have the advantage of the fiat dollar for now.
