I came to the US 7 months ago. My husband and I submitted documentation in November 2018. We got receipts for all the applications. I'm south african by the way. Hes a US Citizen. So I've lost my purse with passports and birth certificates. And I love in Ohio. Our nearest embassy is Chicago. And I do not have the money to travel and replace those docs. However I still have copies that I've filed. My question is. Do I have to have my passport and birth certificates originals for the interview or can I wait till I'm able to work after I get my work permit and replace those documents? Your advise Is highly appreciated.

Contact the consulate in Chicago, you might be able to send them your forms by mail.

I will contact them tomorrow. Hopefully they will answer their phones. Thank you.
