WASHINGTON — Lawmakers who say the military has kicked out 58 Arabic language experts because they were gay want the Pentagon to explain how it can afford to let the valuable specialists go.

Seizing on the latest discharge, involving three specialists, House members wrote the House Armed Services Committee chairman on Wednesday that the continued loss of such "capable, highly skilled Arabic linguists continues to compromise our national security during time of war."

These gay interpreters were bending over backwards to help the military but their interpretations were deemed not helpful..

for instance 'We need some back up' was translated as 'do you have to leave so soon ?'

and

'There is a lot coming down on us' was translated as 'There is a great party here - come and see'

this was wrongful dimissal as the Iraqi unit sending these messages were themselves gay and the interpretations were therefore correct

Well one of them was an officer - and he was inspecting his privates which led to them all being fired

BTW, a linguist is not really an accurate term for someone who translates.

A translator works with written materials, an interpreter does oral translations. To me a linguist is someone who studies languages scientifically. It can be used to describe someone who speaks several languages, but I prefer the less ambiguous term 'polyglot'.

Yeah, I know...I'm totally #######.

The US military deployed a very advanced technique to detect that the guys were gay - every morning they counted the number of bars of soap found on the shower room floor before, and after the interpreters moved into that barrack room...

Actually, double entendres aside (the French don't have a word for that) , there is a special category of immigrant for arabic speakers in the employ of the military and it has a priority date which is pretty high. So getting one's a*ss bust (as you might say) can be doubly bad for these chaps, as presumbly they can't stay and can't go home

Perhaps they could be cured of it and resume their duties soon as possible as they are bent over a barrel right now

what a bummer (Pentagon comment)

Still, as we on vj say, at least they are together and that's the most important thing....

My hairdresser (barber) is gay and he's a fun guy and we have a lot of laughs along the lines above - he said he has converted 5 married men last year... sometimes he holds my ears back a bit longer than is necessary, but in general he doesn't try anything and we get on well

So I say - be tolerant- don't ask and don't drop the soap

Jeez I struggled with that in English, did you write it in arabic first and then translate it?

I though a polyglot was a parrot with a sore throat so I have learned something
