Hello, I am working on filing my taxes and read about the W7 form for my spouse. I see that most people send passport information, but I am having a hard time finding out where my husband can go in Mumbai to get a certified copy of his passport. I do see there are other options on the form like USCIS documentation, but would that require me to send in a copy or my actual acceptance letter from USCIS stating I applied for the spouse visa? Any help is appreciated.

You should ask him to get an apostilled copy of his passport. That way he doesn't need to submit his original passport to the IRS. That's what we did.

Read this website to know how to get that done in Mumbai.

We only submitted the W7 form, apostilled certificate photocopy along with our tax return for the year.

If you only want his passport apostilled, ask your spouse to visit the Videsh Bhawan and carry some coloured photocopies of his passport. They should be able to do it and if anything else is required they will guide him. Getting passport copies apostilled is easy and I suggest you not to get an agent for it. If you want other documents such as Birth certificate or marriage certificate apostilled, it's a bit lengthy process cause for that you need state attestation first before getting an apostille. I am not too sure how good they are in Mumbai but it was easy for me to get my passport photocopies apostilled in my state.
