Social security and I-765

Hi.

My I-485, I-131 and I-765 applications were received by USCIS the 1st week of Dec. I applied for a SSN in Dec, and have a number, but was only able to use it to open a bank account. In early Jan I completed my Biometric appt.

Does it make sense to get a state issued driver's lic prior to hearing from USCIS again? I will need a state issued ID in order to activate my SSN. If I get new drivers ID, I have to turn in my current driver's lic.

I have signed up for both USCIS websites that track my cases, but it does not appear that my cases have even been updated a first time. I check twice a day, but am also signed up for text and email alerts.

Will there be any indication of forward progress on my cases prior to actually receiving (or being denied) an EAD card?

Thanks.

The local SSN office told me I need state ID in order to activate my "my social security " account online.  I was hoping that I would get indication from SSN because the I-765 asks if I want a SSN.

I think you misunderstood.  There is no requirement to "activate" a social security number......you can open an online account with Social Security, but you must have a Social Security Number, a valid email address, and a US mailing address.

Once your Social Security card is issued, the number is active.

Does it make sense to get a state issued driver's lic prior to hearing from USCIS again? Check your local DMV website. I just got my PA license with pending AOS, but every state has different rules.

I will need a state issued ID in order to activate my SSN. Don't really know what you mean, SSN doesn't need activation I

f I get new drivers ID, I have to turn in my current driver's lic. Also, check your local DMV website. Canada is on the list of countries that can transfer their license to a US license, but this is also depending in you DMV (https://www.dmv.org/articles/how-to-transfer-an-out-of-state-drivers-license/)

I have signed up for both USCIS websites that track my cases, but it does not appear that my cases have even been updated a first time. I check twice a day, but am also signed up for text and email alerts. EAD/AP take 4-6 months to be granted. Your status usually changes after a little bit to 'fingerprint review complete', but USCIS is also notorious for not updating. Don't hang on to that too much.

Will there be any indication of forward progress on my cases prior to actually receiving (or being denied) an EAD card? You will (usually) get a notification if you have an account on my.uscis.gov that there was a change in your case. This won't be for a while tho, they just started working on September since 1/1,5 weeks ago

Thanks.

Were you able to sort out this SSN issue? We're having the same issue. We can't use the SSN for anything.... It doesn't match any records. We've called the SSN office and the info is all correct and they have it on file.

Amazing good news! I want to apply for a SSN and I was wondering if I should wait for the working permit first. Did you apply for yours after or before your working permit.

We checked the box on the work authorization form to apply for the SSN. So we got the SSN card about a month after the EAD card arrived in the mail. It happened automatically.

Not sure if you can apply for an SSN before getting the EAD? I bet someone else has the answer.

You may apply for SSN before EAD if you're a K1 visa holder and just recently arrived in the US.  If not, you will have to wait for your EAD before getting your SSN.
