DA,

Today, I received my Green Card through the mail. Evidently, tomorrow I am obliged to inform my employer about my change of status which I will do first thing.

As a permanent resident, do I have to pay Social Security taxes? Or do I only have to pay that when I become a US Citizen?

TIA,

Mark

You will pay the same taxes as any US citizen - Social Security, Medicare, federal income tax and state income tax, if your state has it.

Yep, you pay the same taxes as the rest of the US citizens, and LPRs. Eventually you will benefit from paying into the SS system.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

So I pay into the system for 10 years when I'm not eligible for any benefits (I remember us having to sign the Affidavit of Support as part of the application). That really, really sucks.

Taxation without representation, etc....

Oh, well, I guess those are the rules. Is this the same for all permanent residents? I'm currently a conditional permanent resident (based on marriage).

U.S. citizens who haven't paid into the system for 10 years are not eligible for these benefits either, so we are kind of equal :)

Thanks for everyone's replies. As a follow-up, do I need to inform the Social Security Administration of my change of status? My card currently has ‘Valid for Employment with DHS Authorization’ which, I suppose, doesn’t change. Or do I wait until I’m a US citizen before asking them to change it?

Mark,

If you work (with a few occupations exempted) you have to pay SS 'taxes'. It makes no difference what your immigration status is.

Mark,

You don't have to, but you might want to. As an LPR the notation can be removed from your card.
