K1 interview -- military documents

My fiance is currently in the Royal Air Force with his leaving papers in to be finished in June. The required documents list for embassy website says "If you have served in the military forces of any country you must obtain your military record.  On the day of the visa interview you will be required to furnish either your discharge papers or evidence of terminal leave from the forces."

Has anyone served and needed to bring these documents? What did you bring as a military record? There wasn't anything obvious my fiance could think of that would classify as that type of document. Obviously he has a lot of proof of being in the military, but is there something specific? Same thing for evidence of terminal leave?

Thanks! I'm just wondering how formal these need to be....
