Nine Black Alps

The Manchester foursome's new Everything Is is everything fans of intense guitar-attack rock want. Nirvana without the neuroses.

Maximo Park

Northern England's smart and hyperkinetic dance-rock band pumps up its passionate sound with pulsating keyboards and jittery riffs on A Certain Trigger.

Noisettes

The incendiary Shingai Shoniwa leads this London blues-punk band, known for its feral and explosive live show. A debut album is due this summer.

Sons and Daughters

Glasgow's gender-blended quartet, a gritty folk-rock ensemble, shares sonic ground with Cat Power on its full-length debut, The Repulsion Box.

The Cribs

The edgy Yorkshire trio of brothers blend the Sex Pistols and The Beatles on last year's self-titled debut and The New Fellas, an indie-pop gem that spawned UK hit Hey Scenesters!

Elbow

The Manchester quintet, influenced by Radiohead, Peter Gabriel and Coldplay, toughens its shimmery pop a bit on the current Leaders of the Free World, an emotionally charged survey of politics and media.

Art Brut

South London's clever punk minimalists pour humor, pathos, parody and pretensions into the oddly addictive Bang Bang Rock & Roll, an import.

The Others

Known more for its galvanizing performances than any vocal prowess, the East London pop-punk group impressed critics with last year's self-titled debut.

The Eighteenth Day of May

The London sextet chose an unlikely genre to revive: the British traditional folk-rock of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Trees. And, on their self-titled debut, due May 9, they pull it off enchantingly.

I saw Sons and Daughters in Edinburgh at Hogmanay (same place I saw KT Tunstall). Ever since then, I've been meaning to get into their music more; I really liked them. I can't say much about their music; sort of dark, crunchy pop. The female singer kinda sounds like PJ Harvey.

I only know a tiny bit about Elbow. The others I haven't heard of.

Do you like Belle and Sebastian, Bro Dean?

Absolutely; one of the best (if not the best) bands out of Scotland today. Their new album is completely fantastic; I'm listening to it now. I don't recommend them if you want more straight-up rock, though. B&S have more of a classic pop sound.

If you're wanting more of a rock sound out of the UK or Ireland, might I instead recommend the Frames? They're especially mindblowing live; I had the good fortune to catch them in Philly last year. They're kind of in the mold of Coldplay or U2, but more rocking than Coldplay and more in the vein of old U2, plus a touch of Damien Rice and some Irish traditional elements thrown in.

Steeleye Span are great, so if The Eighteenth Day of May are modelling themselves on SS they'll be pretty good. It's folk-rock; not everyone's taste but I happen to like it a lot.

In the B&Seb vein, you might also want to check out a scouse band called The Coral. They're pretty funky too.

Sons and Daughters are reallly good -- kind of atmospheric, guitar based stuff. I see as more Cat Power than PJ (she being a lot more visceral and rocking)

Maximo Park -- pleasant indie pop. If you check out Belle andSebastian, you won't need to waste time with this though

Elbow- pleasant enough -- I like their tunes but I could name a single one

The Others -- ugh, don't like

Art Brut -- all I know about then is one of them is going out with somone I know

a good website for this kind of british music is www.drownedinsound.com -- they might have better descriptions.
