Hi, my fiancee is getting her vaccines done at local doctor instead of during the medical for k1. There are 2 pneumonia vaccines and she isnt sure which one she needs. Anyone know how to figure if she should take Pneumo 23 or Prevanar 13? Thanks!

Do NOT go to your local doctor

And why is that? The vaccine shots are the same no matter if you get them at your local clinic or at the actual medical. The only thing that differs is the price. I went by the price and had my vaccine shot done weeks in advance of my medical, I brought the note from the local doctor as proof that I already had the vaccine.

That's how easy it is.

It is much cheaper to do vaccines at the local clinics rather than the doctor at the exam, just be careful to follow the guidelines exactly.  I had my husband do this as well, but I am in medical school so I knew what he needed to get.  Just follow the adult catch-up vaccine schedule that the CDC posts online.  It's very simple to follow and is often used for immigrants since other countries don't always follow our vaccine schedule. Children get Prevnar13 routinely and Pneumovax23 is only given to high risk teens .  Not sure if she had this vaccine as a child or not, but double check. If she did, she won't need Pneumovax until she's older. Follow the link I posted. Good luck!

Duplication of tests and the medical. Plus, unless he/she follows the CDC Website Guidelines, you might get more vaccinations than is necessary

I had my flu shot and two others I was missing at my local NHS doctor in England.

No problem at all and free on the NHS.

At the K1 medical, the nurse simply checked my paperwork and signed me off.

The cost of the same vaccinations at the approved medical centre were quite expensive.

Please note these vaccinations are needed for the AOS not the K1, but it is often advised to get them now as they are a fortune in the US!

Pneumonia is not required for anyone under 65, as has been stated by others.

Good Luck.

Doesn’t matter where the person got the vaccines done, at least in Brazil. The day they go to the official medical exam for the visa, the appointed doctor will check the cartão de vacinação and or receipts and see which ones are missing and will have them take them.

as I said previously, other than the tdap and the flu shots, all others are available for free at a posto de saúde.

Yup.

All the panel physician will care about is proof of vaccinations. If there’s no proof, the shot will be given (at added expense). A panel physician will not give shots again where proof is provided.

A titers test counts as proof. As does documentation from your doctor who gave you the shot. Or, in the case of varicella, verbal confirmation of immunity will be sufficient.

But yeah. The shots do not have to be administered by a panel physician.

What's with people fearing of the local doctor? It is the cheaper and most times smarter option.

Go to Local doctor, but first learn about which vaccines you need cause for example pneumonia is probably not needed unless fiance is 65 years old. so first learn what vaccines really needed (for most people its only 5 or 6 of them depending on the season). Get proof of vaccination, this part is important. and take that to your medical appointment with the doctor specified by the embassy. This is it.

Must be different in different countries then, because I had proof of every vaccination I have ever had (from newborn to present) and the medical doctor didn't run any tests at all regarding the vaccinations. He just looked at my records and saw there which vaccinations I have had and ticked the boxes on the DS-3025. Including the shot I mentioned earlier.

So no, no duplication of tests or extra shots. No shots at all actually, since I had taken care of that in advance. Much cheaper and easier.
