On the other hand, we were guided to this course of action by an attorney whose skills are highly regarded on this site, especially by those having to deal with I-601 waivers and those sorts of nastier problems to cope with. She advised us, and sent us on our way, since our case wasn't complicated enough for her to take on. She did well, and I've thanked her elsewhere.

5-15-2002 Met, by chance, while I traveled on business

9-18-2005 Visa in hand
11-23-2005 She arrives in USA
1-18-2006 She returns to Russia, engaged but not married

11-10-2006 We got married!

2-12-2007 I-130 sent by Express mail to NSC

6-25-2007 Both NOA2s in hand; notice date 6-15-2007
9-17-2007 K3 visa in hand
11-12-2007 POE Atlanta

9-13-2008 biometrics
1-30-2009 AOS interview
2-12-2009 10-yr Green Card arrives in mail

2-11-2014 US Citizenship ceremony

When we applied for our marriage license in CA, we both had to raise our hands and affirm under penalty of perjury, verbally, that we "were not married, to anyone else OR to each other" as part of the application process. You don't want to risk any potential deportation issues in the future, do you? If you're already married, why risk it?

We had a "faux" wedding in California so that the family could be involved. We had a real minister, said real vows, had real cake and guests, but we didn't file the paperwork with the state.

We got married by a JP to start the CR-1 rolling on a trip to the USA. Didnt tel family,lol Later on had the "unofficial" wedding for family, they all thought it was real 9and stil do) We had a JP come to the ceremony, but of course did not have any official paperwork (he knew that in advance!!)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
