Easy exchange of labour which could go where it is needed, the cheap jobs in the US would go to say Bulgarians which would remove the incentive for Mexicans to cross the border as there would be no cheap jobs at all for them.

The Bulgarians are part of the EEc now so they just walk in here in the UK without need for papers.. so if the US came into the EEC you could dilute your motel workers with some Bulgarians... I didn't see a topic about whether or not "America should join the EEC" as being anything other than just dumb - considering that its the tangential isses (about the future of the EU and the UK single currency) which have gotten the most responses.

I'm confused, alan. Your timeline says you're the petitioner but you're apparently the beneficiary. Why would you want to come to the U.S. when you have such strong negative feelings about it? Just curious.

Been through this on another forum but basically American society is divided like the UK

Goodies and baddies and good things and bad things - the difference is that as soon as I point out the tinyiest bad thing about the US - a thousand Americans beat heck out of me and tell me to stay away or shut up

When Americans come here and say the roads are tiny and the parking is awful and the beer is too warm and it never stops raining and the prices are a rip off - I laugh along with them... and they have a point. I suppose the UK is more self assured after a couple of thousand years because we know there is a lot of good stuff which offsets it. The US is still insecure and shouldn't be because it has great things going for it too.

I can't seem to get through to people that because I don't like EVERYTHING about the US, that does not mean I am anti-american or a commie or wanting to re-colonize the joint.....

The fact that I am irrevocably moving my whole life there through choice should prove that I don't dislike it as much as some people suspect.. I am retired with a good wad and indexed linked pension and I can live anywhere in the world - and I chose the US - that has to count for something.. If I wasn't married to an American I could saunter in with an investor visa and probably would.

Ironically enough this person was spending a year travelling around the world - but in a very short time demonstrated how very untravelled they were, not only in their knowledge about other countries but their general outlook as well.

You don't have to be particularly patriotic to get pissed off when there's someone around you who does nothing but complain.

The UK is hardly a paradise - we have a national healthcare system and (arguably) better public services - but we also have some of the highest taxation in Europe; and with the country soon to be in Gordon Brown's grubby fingers - things will only get worse.

In am reasonably well travelled and have been to the US literally hundreds of times since before most VJ folk were born. If I thought my future would be better in the UK I would stay here. I want to go to a free country with free speech where I can say how I feel about what I like and dislike without fear of violence or approbation or deportation .... and where people will engage me in a friendly rational discussion. Even North Korea or Stalins Russia would welcome me if I only said what I liked - if the US wants to differentiate itself from places like that then it had better start being more tolerant .... not for my sake but for it's own sake - it has come along way with black and women's rights and is an established country.

When it was fighting to get borne in 1777 then extreme nationalism was appropriate - but those days are gone and so should the fear of not measuring up sometimes- the whole world saw new orleans so it's not like the cat isn't out of the bag
