I will not move anywhere colder then here. No way on earth.

I didn't think Portland got that cold, being on the water and all. I was able to find some houses around 300k in the suburbs.  😍 But that is 3x the price of ours without an return in value besides place.

Right now, staying here with both of us working, we'll be able to save lots (for us, not by Steve standards) for retirement and travel. With a mortgage, not so much.

who was a popular mayor....Koch was very popular. Giuliani was popular, he cleaned up a lot. Bloomberg the first 1.5 terms (out of 3), he did quite a bit to improve education. .

NYC pre-Giuliani was pretty gritty.

It's a not quiet as warm in the summer winters seem to be about the same but I'm thinking with less sunlight there it wouldn't be as warm as here. The cost of living is almost doubled to here and since it rains more there my bones would ache more.

I need to find a better spot but since I can't move to Hawaii I'll settle for farther away form Little Rock

Little Rock. It's a pit. I used to hate having to go there to the VA. I think my worst trip in and out of that place was when NZ friends, who clearly don't understand, asked me to pick them up and take them back to the train station downtown. At 0300. Drug deals at the traffic lights right before the station, far off gun fire, and some jerk who tried to block me in the car park and wouldn't move.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Is it really that bad?  I had always pictured it as being like Bismarck or something - little bit of a hick town, not much going on, and some strip malls.

It's pretty bad. The murder rate alone is pretty high really.  There are several outstanding unsolved, but not yet deemed 'cold" Of those, one sticks out in my mind. Every time we drove down there, we had to pass a busy intersection where there was a little white cross, usually several little bunches of flowers around it, in front of a Starbucks. There was a young woman shot dead there, with her baby in the back seat, who was unharmed. In daylight no less, and nobody saw a thing.  Drugs are a problem, gangs are a problem.

It actually was the 5th most dangerous town in the US for a very long time....and it’s not that big of a city.

That was North Little Rock, not Little Rock and sadly we drive by there way too often.

Houses in Hawaii are expensive too! This was the cheapest acceptable house I could find, but they do have bananas growing in the yard, so that is a plus.

That one is actually not bad for the price. I always figured little shacks would be crazy priced. So I never bother to look for any I just like the idea.

I saw a clip the other day, a woman was being interviewed in LR about neighborhood watches, and her new Ring doorbell, and right in the middle of that ...gunshots. She was like...'Y'all hear that?!? Goes on every day."

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Oh ya it's sickening, sirens constantly going off.

I want to be somewhere quiet for a change.

I finally have the Hillbilly willing but just not fast enough for me.
