 slow moving disaster

Slow moving disaster, if things move any slower here, they'd be moving backwards.....

And it's not because of the companies.

For anyone humping for an Amazon HQ's in their city, they should visit the slow moving disaster Seattle has become over the last 10 years. Full disclosure: I left Seattle (24 yr resident) in 2011 and returned several times since on visits. Bottom line, these tech companies don't want to locate in the sticks or in some 2nd or 3rd rate city. They want all the culture and none of the taxes associated with 1st rate cities. It's the same thing with sports stadiums. These are all lousy deals. Call the bluff on these tech companies and sports teams. Until we do, these blackmail (kompromat) moves will continue forever.

I read an opinion piece somewhere about this and I have to say that I agree. For all these companies purport that they have liberal values, it is quite telling that they don't want to be in Rust Belt cities as an act of revitalization.  It is probably more telling that Amazon treats their warehouse workers like 💩. I have major respect for companies that choose to call Minnesota home.  It tells me a lot about them and their values.

TIL I learned Nordic Ware is also HQed in our state. I have so many Nordic Ware pans!

Glories of living in a small town: it has been noticed that there is a definite correlation between women looking for a cleaning help and divorce within several years.

The Dane should take note of this.

Can your doctor call maybe or just show up there in person?

I'm guessing they tried to call that is why the left it p to me. I hate going into Little Rock so unless I must go there I avoid it at all cost. I read the reviews for the place and it seems like the whole place is a hot mess. Good doctor if you get 5 minutes of her time but 2+ hours of waiting is not worth it.

I'm thinking I may just go see my GP and ask him his thoughts. I'm leaning on just going with what the Allergy Association/board and not bother with shots as I've had way to many reactions and I haven't even made it to the maintenance phase.

And it's not because of the companies.

15 years ago I paid $545/month for a no frills 1 BR apartment overlooking the Puget Sound. I checked it online and today it rents for $1850/month. Looks like they upgraded the kitchen cabinets and appliances. Woo hoo. Almost all rents have tripled in the last 10-15 years. That might sound like hyperbole but you can look it up. I doubt seriously that either NYC or SF can claim that kind of inflation. It's not all Amazon's fault but even where it's city politican's fault, it's often because they're kissing the posterior of Amazon and feel they have no choice, even though they do. I don't know what kind of tax breaks have been given Amazon in Seattle but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a slow moving total of $2 billion. And what does Seattle get for it? Death march paced traffic with only a skeletal construction of mass transportation network. Meanwhile the skyline looks terrible and the city gets less livable every day.

NYC residents love to complain. And I get it. It's part of your cultural identity. Has there ever been a popular NYC mayor, I mean ever? Lindsay, Koch, Dinkins, Guiliani, Bloomberg, the current guy (I might have missed a couple)? When you're trying to please 20 million people you're going to fail.

My oldest moved to Seattle, I'm still trying to figure out how he's able to afford his rent. It's like 1600 or something like that. He's working in a bakery and his fiance has not found work yet. Well not the last time we chatted.

Out of all my kids he is the one with his head in the clouds.

Lindsay, Koch, Dinkins, Guiliani, Bloomberg, the current guy (I might have missed a couple)? When you're trying to please 20 million people you're going to fail.

Actually, does Seattle have a city income tax? Washington state an income tax? You have to do the math. If  Amazon pays avg 100k, for 20,000 people, take the tax revenue, and multiply it by a couple of decades. Then the long term corporate tax, the secondary jobs created. Add the sales tax of the extra consumer power too.

Now I dunno about Washington, but for NY, that revenue is about 30 billion lost over the next decade. But eh, I wasn't crazy about the idea either it would have definitely put a burden on Queens. But hey, I make a comfortable living here. So I couldn't care less if they came or not.  But economically, it wasn't a bad thing. Don't forget, that 3 billion dollar tax break, it's not like there's 3 billion sitting around that we gave them. It's a tax break, not a gift. We were going to get it back and then some. It's not like it was money in hand that we could have spent elsewhere.

who was a popular mayor....Koch was very popular. Giuliani was popular, he cleaned up a lot. Bloomberg the first 1.5 terms (out of 3), he did quite a bit to improve education. .

I'm sure he will be, but I wish he was closer. Not a grandma yet. Maybe a few more years depending on boy #2 #1 doesn't really want kids. I guess it will be up to his fiancee.
