Hi trudi, what kind of work do you do at the airport, if I might ask? My father worked his entire career in the airlines industry so I'm always interested in these kinds of stories.

Usually falls are the beginning of an older person needing a lot more assistance.

A few weeks of 10-hour days on one project several years and employers ago (and a complaint that I put said ten hour days on my time sheet -- somehow they did not seem aware that if an hourly contractor works more hours, you need to pay them more) and I was having very serious discussions with management (also because I was only supposed to be up in San Jose for two months, which turned into three and then four and then I said the original terms of this work were that I'd come up to San Jose for two months and then go back to working from in San Diego and if that's not okay I'll find a new job). Still worked for them for a few more years after that; I hate looking for work, man.

I left a job here in AR. 911 call center, police dispatch. Certainly not what I'd been doing for years, but even so.  24/7 operation, of course, divided into three shifts with two on at a time.  They only had 9 staff in total.  Nothing like enough. So even on your two days off, you weren't allowed to leave the county.

 

What tipped me over the edge, and out the door, was her idea to give the place a shake-up. Musical chairs, effective on the day. I was hired for 3-11, perfect with a sick husband at home, and was moved to nights. The two that worked days, with little kids in school were moved to 3-11 which meant they would have to arrange childcare. The night people were shifted to mornings. Yah, nah.

 

So I quit. The boss told me that they were an "at will" employer. I defined what that actually meant to her. And when I left, overnight, four other people left as well. Having understood that it was 'at will' for them as well.  If you don't stand up to this sort of nonsense, no one will do it for you. The boss ended up on nights, on her own, for months. I thought that was just about perfect.

I do flight ops for 2 airlines, about 15 flights a day which doesn't sound a lot but there are usually only 3 staff to work.

So far my direct manager has gone over the GM's head and called in the regional manager, all staff who work for airline a have refused to cover airline b and have said they'll quit if it's enforced. 1 of my colleagues has also put her 2 weeks in and the other is looking for a new job.

If this keeps up he won't be able to operate any flights for airline b in a very short time.... it's sad 

In other news I had a telephone interview today for a position that pays almost double, has regular mon-fri hours and doesn't want my soul

T-Bone I hope your mum heals up quickly & doesn't find her confidence knocked by this as can often occur, if balance is becoming an issue might she consider some T'ai Chi Ch'uan? It really does help with stability by working to lower the center of gravity & strengthen the lower body.  For her bruising would your mum use arnica?

 

As for my lovely husband's health condition, it's our understanding he won't be offered a liver transplant as the root of his condition(neuroendocrine cancer) is an ongoing hormonal imbalance, it's a constant fight against the inevitable. .....if only livers grew on trees......understandably folks with more favourable circumstances will have priority.

 

As for wills, that's a really good point, however, right atm we have so much going on what with all the doctors/hospital appointments(he's apparently an extremely rare case so being studied by the two separate major university specialists plus another top of the neuroendocrine field doc in addition to a renal/urologist ) & trying to get our/my AOS sorted out,  also he's still insisting on working 12 hour constant night shifts (he's a hard working determined SOB which I love & admire him massively for ) so I've made a note of it & once things settle down a bit we can get it taken care of. 

 

Thankyou everyone for your understanding & support. This wasn't at all how we could have imagined the start of our married life to be but we can only play with the cards as we are dealt them. We will do what we can & make the best of what we have. NikLR you're absolutely right & I'm so glad I'm here with him now,  that doesn't mean I don't feel like we've been 'robbed' sometimes, I am working on counting my blessings & having gratitude, there are times when I struggle.
