Woke up today to an email from USCIS -- logged an and it was a notice the interview letter has been sent!

Now it's panic time pulling together all the evidence since our wedding. We've been collecting it but without any organization. Eeek!

Woohoo that is fantastic news. So happy to hear this. :)

Hi everyone,

We had our AOS interview today and got approved on the spot!!!! We are so happy.

Documents we brought:

Copies of all the forms submitted

New medical examination

passports and driver's license

current and past EAD

proof of relationship evidence (joint bank account, health insurance, car insurance, joint lease, joint credit cards, a ton of pictures of our relationship)

During our interview, the officer just asked us for our passports, licenses, and EAD. They reviewed the whole original AOS application and asked the following questions:

What do you like about each other?

What do you like to do as a couple?

How did you meet?

What year did you meet each other?

Where did you go on your first date?

When did you get married?

How did you propose?

What is your spouse's birth date?

Are you currently working?

When did you start working?

The officer was nice and everything went smoothly.

Best of luck to everyone out there!

Congratulations to all on the interviews and approvals!

After 2 months of waiting post-interview... we got an RFE for not having the correct document for birth certificate. So frustrating since we had been using this document for all the previous applications/steps over the last 2 years and it was acceptable Ugh.

Re-submitted new birth certificate last week, so the waiting begins again...

Congrats! I hadn't logged in for a couple weeks and just saw this.

New medical exam? Is that necessary? I thought the I-693 submitted with the K1 qualified for that?

Not necessary. The officer didn't ask for it. I also read online that it was not required for the K1 but make sure to double check. I just wanted to play it safe.

Did any of you have to file a second (or update your original) 864?

The language on the interview letter is a little vague (it says "unless already filed" but also says they want all current financial info.)

Less than a week to go. Finished putting together the relationship documentation and it fills two 1.5" binders -- and to think I was worried because we were light on pics and emails! The actual filings fill a third binder.

No we did not have to which was good cause my husband at that point was not working and I was the one making all the money. Still am although he now has a part time job. Funny how things change that way. Yeah those interview letters are hard to read into what exactly they mean. We just brought the current tax stuff since we had sent in 2016 taxes so when we had our interview we brought 2017 taxes. So if I were you just bring in the 2018 taxes.

Wow I did not bring near that much and we were ok. All we brought was our joint bank account, our car insurance, the title to my car in both our names, the health insurance and I brought other things but they weren't interested. He did however love my picture collage I had made up of our first year together since moving to the USA back in October 2017. Right now I am currently preparing for my ROC which isn't for another year but as we collect stuff I add it to our folder lol. We are currently working on getting a mortgage and buying a house which for both of us is a first as we have only ever rented but we both recently cleared all debts and are for the first time debt free and ironically we decided to go for a house because we both want a place to call our own. A place we can putter around in, do gardening, painting, and grow old together. :)

Good luck on your interview. You both will do great.

The language of the letter is intentional. They are often called open-ended questions, they require more thought and more than a one-word answer.

Speaking of binders, here are some tips from USCIS on packaging of apps/documentation for submission: https://www.uscis.gov/forms-filing-tips . We had good luck with the two-hole punch method with prong fasteners method for all of  our USCIS submissions.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Back from the interview! Approved on the spot. The interviewer was very kind and kept things pretty easy and mostly just observed us interacting to his discussion and questions. No real issues but we had a small panic when he asked us for the medical, and then he realized we were K1 and didn't need it and apologized, apparently we were the 8th interview of the day (it was just after noon) for him and K1s of course are rare compared to others that do need medicals.

Given the low level of activity on this thread, I suspect we're probably the lone of the last January AOS filers, if not the last, (that's still active on VJ, anyway) to get approved. The has been a loooong journey, and thanks to everyone who's been supportive here!

Sharing my AOS (based on K1) history for those who may be interested:

  • AOS 18 months ago.
  • AOS Interview 5 months ago; no decision at time of interview and no new information since then.
  • I-131/I-765 renewal filed four months ago (120 days before expiration, as requested).  Still no decision, so can't work anymore and can't travel outside USA anymore.

If this is you (or even longer), you're not alone.  Godspeed and best wishes.  I'll post any updates as I have them.

Nope...you're not the last.  Still waiting.  January 10, 2018 AOS filer.  Congrats.  I'm happy for you.

Wow! I hope it goes through for you soon. Maybe we were the last to be interviewed. I can't imagine doing the interview and still not knowing 5 months later.

You're got to be nearing some kind of inquiry deadline, aren't you?

As are we!

The green card arrived in today's mail, exactly a week after the interview.

Unfortunately it still has her maiden name. The officer said he'd change it to her married name -- we were waiting on the GC to change it everywhere else. I guess we still can but that's yet another thing we'll have to file with USCIS for.

Yes, we are "outside normal processing time" as of June 10, 2019. So, we contacted USCIS and we were told:

  • We should wait at least two more months.
  • No infopass appointments will be given.
  • There are no other options other than to wait.

So, we wait.  It's now been 821 days since I dropped the K1 Visa petition in the mail.  1,000 days here we come!
