Wow, I am able to see our case online! It shows they received a request from Social Security Administration. I used this link though: https://www.uscis.gov/save/casecheck . The link you provided just had a log in but it doesn't say how I can create an account. If there's some other place to check, please share! :)

That sucks! You might have tried this already but I have read that going to the office will be better than just calling. I also am able to see my SAVE case progress with the link I shared above. I just picked a Document ID that I had and it worked.

Appreciate you posting this!  I checked my wife's case and see the following:

Case Status

case-closed.png Case Returned to Agency

Description

SAVE has returned your case to Maryland - Social Security Administration, SSA (Single Signon) - WS v37.

So I assume it is now in the hands of SSA....

Mine also said "Case Returned to Agency". I printed a copy of the page and went back to the SSA office to let them know. They looked at my original receipt from SSA to look us up. They cleared our application for processing and said we'll receive the SSN in 2 weeks. So if it comes in 2 weeks, total wait time will be 3 weeks.

You should wait 1 week after arriving in the US till you are in the SAVE database that you can go the next business day. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet (what is SAVE), and it will require manual verification from the USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe. If you have waited the 2 weeks and they tell you they cannot verify your arrival record via the SAVE database, then personally return on another day to have them search again -- thus eliminating the manual verification (you don't want to do the manual verification as it adds so much more time to the process).

To apply for a SSN you will need to go to your local SSA office and bring the documents below. These documents are proof of your eligibility to file for a SSN:

The SS-5 form  download and complete the application (they have some at the office if you forget).

Your Passport (with the K-1 Visa attached)

Your valid I-94

Another form of valid ID (birth certificate will do nicely)

You should also print and bring the document RM 10211.530 , in the event that the agent is not knowledgeable that K-1/K-2 are eligible to receive a SSN.

I remember reading your above info GB, and was happy to locate it again.    My wife has been here for 13 days, and I've been checking that SAVE casecheck site to see if her info is in the SAVE system but Geowrian mentions that it's not possible to use Casecheck or anywhere else to see if we're actually in the system.  So based on your one week wait suggestion, I'm thinking we will head over to the SSN office tomorrow.   Just curious if you have any updates/new suggestions as your post was made on Jan  3.........or is the information here still valid as far as you know??   Usual thanks for your great advice.

The information as I know it today is still valid. Follow the instructions and you should be ok. Two things to remember, don't take no from the window clerk so seek a supervisor for additional clarification. Also, if push comes to shove do not let them do an inquiry for the SAVE portion as it will take weeks and weeks for anything there to happen so you will not get the SSN until much later on in the process. Leave and give it a week or so and try again.

Thanks Greenbaum.   So here's what happened.......we went in early on the 17th, so missed your message......exceptionally friendly woman at the window, so we turned over the application, passport and I-94.  She was merrily typing away...and it started taking a bit longer than I thought it should and I started seeing some confused looks.   I asked "is her information all properly linked in the SAVE system".   Response:   "oh, yeah, everything is fine, I just need to have my supervisor come over to check my entries".   Supervisor comes by.............I've now got two of them with puzzled expressions looking at the screen.  She then tells me...."ok, this will likely take 3-4 days longer because "they" need to do some verification on your information".   well, we were 35 minutes in at this point, and she was pretty vague about what was going on.   We accepted it and left.

So earlier today I logged onto the Casecheck site, and it shows the case transferred to the SAVE system on the 17th, and returned to SS on the 18th.   I logged in just now, and it's showing Case Under Review.   Yeah, I should have known they could not have turned it around in 24 hours.   But if the "Maximum Days Left" means anything, hopefully the gal at the SSO was right, and it will only be delayed by a few days.

Well at this moment they kind of have you by the short hairs. You'll need to continue to wait till such time as you see a chang or your card is sent to you. There isn't anything you can do at this time.

LOL...........the proverbial short hairs indeed !!    😄

Oh well, it may delay the drivers license, and adding her to accounts, but insurance accepted her without the SSN, and that was our most critical issue.

Taking greater than 6 weeks.  We applied for my wife's on April 18th and got manual verification, even though she had been in the country greater than 2 weeks (4/7).  I called SSA today.  Course, they can't tell you anything about it over the phone due to they cannot look up based on reference numbers, but the lady told me according to their policy, it is taking up to 45 days (Government days, not weeks of course....).

That was exactly what the lady told us today that there is a mismatch and that's going to take 12weeks to be worked on...I don't understand at all

We have a mismatched issue as well. It not only took 2 visits to the SS office, but the time additionally to take for the DHS (I think, whichever is in the connection to correct things here) to resolve this too.

It took my husband 1 month to get it.

Applied for SS on July 18, so 26 days now.   Got a call from them.........."sorry, your application is dead because you got married before you applied for the SS card."   She had no name change, and I could swear I have read here that it should not make a difference if you apply before or after marriage if no name change.   The rep told us that it's impossible to do anything at this point and we have to wait until after she receives the green card.

So the question in my mind..........do we wait to see if the card comes in the mail, or do I head to another office to inquire or reapply?    I felt the information she was giving me was incorrect but I did not do any homework on the issue as the call caught me completely off guard.   I was figuring on seeing some mail from them this week.

Can you point to the POM where this is addressed?    (i could not see it in a cursory overview.........looking at the Handbook now..  https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.02/handbook-toc02.html

I'd look at another office, or at least a different individual. This is assuming you still have at least 14 days of legal status on your I-94 left (if that period has passed, there's nothing they can do).

I'd just refer to here: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

Nothing in there refers to one's marital status. The only thing that matters is their immigration status, which is still K-1.
