Hey everyone ~

My fiance has been on AP at the US embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka since 4 September 2018 and our status on the CEAC site still has not changed from "Ready." We've emailed the embassy once a month and have gotten pretty generic responses. Our latest inquiry yielded this response ...

"Our office is waiting for certain clearances to further process your case. We understand your difficulty because of the delay in the processing. The timing for these clearances are generally based on the history of the case. Our office will contact you as soon as your case gets the clearance."

My fiance was born in Dubai, UAE and I'm aware that AP usually takes longer if the beneficiary is from a MENA country, so we're not really surprised.

Has anyone else's status been stuck on Ready? Also, does anyone else know what the "certain clearances" could be? Any advice appreciated!

-Anna

Hi Anna!

AP is completely normal everyone has to go through it before their visa is issued. As you said certain countries and beneficiary backgrounds can make AP take longer.

Did they take your fiancé’s passport on the interview day? If so that is usually a good sign AP won’t take very long. However if your fiancé still has their passport you may be in for a little bit longer of a wait. No one can really say how long it will take it. AP can take days, weeks or months. Keep checking in with the embassy like you have been.

Nope, they actually gave his passport back but kept his original birth certificate! I'm just worried that they'll send our case back to USCIS for "review" and we won't know until many more months go by. Do you think the fact that they're waiting on clearances a good sign?

Unfortunately AP takes as long as it takes; there is no maximum time period for it.

You can, but you'll just receive a standard boilerplate response saying something like your case is pending approval due to security checks.

Can they send a case back to USCIS for "Review" and then not inform the beneficiary or petitioner that it happened or why?

@NearEthereal  that's actually exactly what we're scared of. We're scared that AP will last a while and be sent back during this time, leaving us in the dark. I'm afraid that if it is sent back to USCIS, that we won't be informed until way later, or perhaps not receive a decision/letter at all. I wish this process wasn't so ambiguous but we're hoping for the best.

Hi,

I, too, have the same concern. We’re different countries but I’m in the same boat. My fiancé’s interview was 9/19/18 & he was given a 221g, placed under AP pending further review of his divorce documents from his first marriage. My congressman’s office made an inquiry for me back in December & I just got a response from them last week saying mostly the same thing. They also informed us that they can’t guarantee a timeline due to all the security alerts in Haiti so I believe I’ll be in this black hole for while. I’m just hoping & praying that it ends with an approval because my fiancé and I would be devastated if they sent our case back with no warning/chance of redemption after waiting alll this time.

One can only hope, be patient, & try to remain positive. I hope you hear something soon if you haven’t already.

Did you receive your visa?
