dude, Portland IS weird! people here do ask me where my accent is from, but nobody gives a damn about putin etc. must be something in the Oregon water.

Yeah, or maybe not in the water since they don't do fluoride here, lol. ;) This is the weirdest state I've lived in, and that's saying a lot because I'm from Florida originally (the weird northern part, not the hip cool Miami area in the south).

I miss living in a bigger city and hope maybe relocating to somewhere else eventually in the US might help. I definitely feel "relocation blues" after moving back to the US and I've been here for over a year now...le sigh.

Please don't take it offensively! We (Americans) have a weird obsession with accents. haha and for obvious reason (because its awesome!) the British one is at the top of the list. I know it probably makes you feel a weird way but just look at it as people are genuinely interested in getting to know you and about you. Put a positive spin on it so it won't hit you so hard and feel special because you get to see the country that most of us see as "usual" through a fresh pair of eyes. Immigrants are the foundation of this country so feel proud of it!

Good luck on your journey, hon!

You're post brought a smile to my face so thank you. I'm not yet over there and all my previous trips (excluding the last one) I've felt a little out of place when people are like "You're not from here are you, where are you from?" but then you have to realise it's all just out of the ordinary for them!

Don't feel out of place. Feel elevated because they think you are awesome, fascinating, intelligent, posh, etc. Embrace your new popularity.

It's a compliment to you.  That means people here love to listen to someone who has an accent.  Embrace being a little different or speaking with an accent.  It took me a few years to realize that.  Pretty soon, you will feel more comfortable & people will enjoy being around you, especially with a beautiful accent. Hugs...……..

So true! For anyone who is feeling "out of place" because you speak with an accent, please realize that so many of our own parents or grandparents spoke with accents. With the exception of indigenous people, our ancestors all came from somewhere else - many within the last couple of generations . You are carrying on that tradition.

Yay! I'm so glad! Use it to your advantage to make new friends and connections and you'll be golden when you come here! Best of luck!

Fun story: Just the other day I was calling to set up cable service and a guy with a British accent took my call. 30 min later, I signed up for twice as much as I actually intended on getting. 😬🤦‍♀️ Oh well lol

Some things that my wife is struggling with:

America is a car culture. She is accustomed to seeing lots of people. Now, all she sees is cars.  Everything is spaced out in the USA because we just hop in the car to go to the next store. She can’t wave down a trike and ride anywhere in town for 8 pesos. Until she can get a license, she’s dependent on me to take her places.

Luckily, she has her 2 daughters with her. I have great internet so they video chat with family in the night.

I’ve seen how homesick she’s been and it shows me the depth of her love that she hasn’t asked to go back.

The same for my husband! One of the biggest culture shocks for him has been transportation. In Sweden, he's used to being able to hop trams or just simply walk somewhere. We really can't walk to anything from our house, and it's rendered him pretty dependent on me for getting around, until he gets his license. I know it's been rough on him and is a big change.

Sometimes it just takes a visit back home to know where your heart is :) I'm so happy to hear things have turned a corner a bit for you. I'm tempted to send my husband to Sweden to visit his family, even if it's without me, so he can get a similar reboot. Not working yet has been hard on him, and I can only imagine how monotonous it can get after a while.

i said "foreign accents"

Believe me, i am the last person who feels victimized over anything. It's simply annoying.

Again, you are telling me how i feel : )

All i am saying is that people feel different than you. I see that its all fun for you, great, I do believe that you mean no harm, but may be think about how others feel too when you annoy them about their accents.

You came off REALLY aggressive, by the way. The poster's original comments did not come off as pretentious or bossy to me in any way, shape, or form, and I'm not sure why you decided to take it that way. For what it's worth? I get about as many comments on my strong southern American accent whenever I'm in Sweden, and never took it personally. Sure, it could be different if I were living there full time instead of only visiting. People ARE mostly just innocently interested, and find a person who is from another place interesting. As the OP of this thread has done, I encourage you to take the same notion with your own experience and turn it into a positive. Continuously attacking people and remaining victimized by something that's probably very harmless (by intention) doesn't resolve anything.

Håll ut, y'all.
