i have read all sorts of stuff too, but i have seen a lot of people saying get the SSN before marriage, then change the name after the marriage while you wait for EAD/AoS stuff because sometimes SSA wont give you a SSN until you have GC which can take months, but you need the SSN for things like bank accounts etc

Correct and it helps demonstrate that you are comingling your assets for the AOS.

I think this is the route we are gonna go, get her social security card as soon as she gets here, get married, then change the name on the card then add her to my accounts for AoS Less of a headache.

I think this is accepted as the "proper" way to do things. Seems like it would make more sense, at least for those doing "courtroom marriages", to just knock out the marriage/name change and then do the card, but for some reason it's always advised to get the card first.

The reason is two fold. 1. you eliminate the hassle of not being able to get the SSN after marriage because someone in the SS office doesn't understand the process. 2. It helps in putting the beneficiary on financial "stuff" which is a strong indicator for the adjudicator of your AOS package that you are becoming a "married couple".

Here are the instructions to having a smooth SS visit:

Some questions I have please help :)

1. Once a case# is given has there been an issue where it was rejected (since NVC does a background check) or they only give out the case number once it’s ok and ready to ship out to the USEM Ok and ready to ship. NVC does not do background checks. The will look over the case approval from USCIS and if it has not been stamped or the 3 criminal questions haven't been checked off the it's returned to USCIS to complete then returned to NVC to create the case number.

2. My fiancé finished his contract in Dubai and will be going him next week! Would it be best to get his medical done already since we have the MNL# or those have an expiration date and better off to be done once it’s in transit to the Philippines? (I ask this because his police clearance there has an expiration date)

The validity of the visa is based on the medical date so it is best to wait once you have either the letter from NVC with the case number or the letter from USEM with the case number. SLEC requires one or the other. NBI and CENOMAR must be no older then 6 months at the time of the interview.

I’m going to the Philippines to see him in April! So im really really hoping he has his interview by then 😓😓😓

thank u! This websiteand reading everyone else’s posts alleviates my anxiety *breatheeeee* If you join the Philippine forum here on VJ your anxiety will even go down that much more. Just saying.

You're a better man than me..........I'm still breathing a sigh of relief over the NVC case, and you're already focusing on AOS.

Speaking of that AOS, I could be way off on this, but my thought on is that it's expensive and more bureaucracy, but at least at that point he/she is already in the US so the sense of urgency decreases exponentially.    I have not read squat on it, so that's purely conjecture on my part.  I did read a bit about people saying changing name is a hassle if done prior to AOS.  Personally, I'm thinking name change after blue passport issued.   Not high on my list of priorities, and well below "ease of processing stuff".

The name change is done at the time of marriage. Once marriage is complete, your certificate will be issued with the new name. Once you have that then you can legally use the chosen "married name" on all future documents including a new passport. Of course, you can still travel with the old passport just bring along the marriage certificate to prove the name change. Airline tickets still are purchased using the current passport name. The name change process doesn't influence the AOS or ROC one bit.

Many thanks Greenbaum.   Lots of chatter here regarding the Social Security Number..........timing, name used, etc.   I've seen folks complaining that when they've tried to get the SSN after marrying and the name change, they encounter difficulty with staff that ain't too swift with out of the ordinary "foreign" issues.  (heh heh..couldn't resist).   Popular opinion seems to be "get the SSN before marriage, then change the name on the account after".   Can you offer an opinion on this?

My interview in the embassy is  coming March 22nd and my medical exam March 8th. I am excited for that. Thanks and good luck everybody 🙂

Absolutely great news for you !!!      I ran some numbers that only pertain to Bangkok embassy, but the average duration from Packet 3 submission to visa receipt is 41 days.    I'm still hopeful for an April 7 visa receipt date.   Just for your reference, average time from interview to visa receipt is 9 days......obviously Peru could be different.

I recommend, and this is what we did and had no problems, getting the SSN prior to marriage. Do it in the first week the beneficiary arrives in the states. Don't take no we can't do it BS from SS. Sell them on the fact that it would be helpful if they were to present to you their supervisor. :D
