UK regional forum

I'm one of the people who uses the "View New Posts" thing. I hate going into each forum and looking for new posts. Ergo, I ended up in that little "incident" as well, although I didn't get a chance to post.

Those people freak me out. What is their issue with other people being in "their" forum? Of course, considering who the loudest whiner was, it isn't really surprising. Dude has some serious issues, and has for some time.

I won't worry about any of "them" coming over and reading this, since this is the UK forum and it's all password protected, has invisible fonts, and all that......right?

I took a sneaky peek last night in the Sub-Forum That Thinks It's a Club, and my reaction was . What I found amazing is that they all closed ranks so quickly, and took the line that whatever they're going through is so unlike what anyone else is going through that other VJers could NEVER understand. Sounds like me when I was a teenager!

I tried to put aside some of the really quite borderline-misogynistic statements and think: would this happen in the UK sub-forum? Well, I like to think that we don't take ourselves seriously enough here that that would ever happen. All of us, and I mean ALL of VJ, are going down a tough road and its a bit silly and embarrassing that a few fruitcakes in that sub-forum are throwing up roadblocks to some genuine discourse and attempts at cross-cultural understanding.

Actually, that was just so sickly-sweet I think I may throw up myself now.

There's no way anyone that isn't involved with someone from the UK could possibly understand the intricacies of our relationships...

We didn't used to have Regional Forums on VJ. I sort of liked it.

Off-Topic discussions would sometimes turn to 'cultural differences'. If there was debate, it was usually spirited and friendly. Generally things were quite amicable - we made friends from around the world and it was a lot easier to pick up interesting tidbits about other cultures without feeling like an 'interloper'.

On the other hand regional forums do a good job of keeping the flame fest posts on the "ME/NA" forum nicely compartmentalised.

Moderation has never been the strong suit of VJ though has it? Ewok rarely intervenes in anything. That's his choice and part of what makes VJ what it is. Some other forums I occasionally post on go the completely opposite way and its just as annoying.

Hell I've been banned from televisionwithoutpity.com twice and currently have a warning, all for really mild posts that seemed to anger the moderator who I can only assume has emotional problems!

The only time I mind is when non-UKers answer questions based on their own Embassy experience which can have nothing to do with the London Embassy process, etc. Those answers, while interesting, have the potential to mislead (accidently, of course) newbies who don't notice the different flag on the side.

That kinda stuff bothers me. People jumping in on discussions about snack food or cultural attitudes - eh, whatever. So long as they don't muck with what I see as VJ's top usefulness - getting good, helpful information out to people trying to get through a nutty, crappy process.

Part of my position at work used to be moderating our customer forums. I am so glad I've gone up in the world since those days. Moderating public forums is sticky, and you get screams of "NAZI!" if they don't like what you've done. Unfortunately our customers are much younger than the folks who post here, so they actually require moderation and slaps on the bums. I'd like to think we are all old enough and mature enough to bite our own tongues from time to time

Yeah, this happens all over on VJ though doesn't it? My personal favorite being threads about Drivers Licences, which always go somewhere along these lines:

Q: How do I get a DL, I'm in California.

Oh well. To each his own. I never visit other regional forums, why would I? I figured they're on about ME/NA bickering or Canadian maple syrup or mail order brides, or other stuff I have no interest in.

I had to laugh when I looked to the bottom of this page and YOU were the last poster on the New Philippines Regional Forum Thread this evening!

Yeah, cuz I moved a thread & explained why. Because I'm helpful, not an instigator.

What I saw in there shocked me Lisa. You are grown women who went in & started trolling & stirring the pot. Why? Cuz you wanted to. Honestly it looked like something tennage girls would do. Who cares what they think of their forum? I think you have to admit a Russian wife is a helluva a lot different than a UK spouse/fiance.
