Spouses GC doesn't expire until April, so we have some time and we postponed, for other reasons, our overseas trip until next year. Trying not to worry too much about this process and just let it flow.

I can also see on the old case status site that my e-request is currently "assigned to an officer for response". Hoping to hear back soon as well.

That means no license till i get the notice.

I telecommute and don't have kids, so it is not that big of an issue, but i cannot imagine how other people deal with this.

In my 10 years of dealing with USCIS, this is the first time i have been so frustrated.

Sorry about your situation. It is very frustrating and unfair.

 

It seems field offices are following different procedures regarding issuing the I-551 stamp, since there seems to be no standard USCIS policy on this. However, USCIS is obligated to provide us proof of LPR status. Since we are required to carry the proof of our permanent resident status at all times and failure to do so is a misdemeanor offense [8 USC §1304(e)]. I personally don't carry my GC with me all the time (too risky) unless I am travelling within 100 miles of the US border.

 

If you don't get your NOA1/extension letter soon, I would suggest the following options:

• Try doing a walk-in at your local field office. If you are able to get in & past the security, you might be able to explain your situation (DL expiring) to an officer & get the stamp.
• Contact your local Congressman or Senator office & explain them your DL situation. They can help you by sending an inquiry on your behalf to USCIS regarding the NOA1 letter. Usually this gets a faster response from USCIS.

Atlanta Field office is not allowing walkins or info pass.

Your work authorization (& your LPR status) does not expire when your 2yr conditional GC expires, as long as you have filed I-751 petition & it is pending. And if you used your 2yr conditional GC when you starting working for your current employer to fill the initial I-9, then your employer cannot re-verify your work authorization again or ask you to complete the I-9 form again.

 

If your 2yr GC has not yet expired, I would suggest applying for the unrestricted Social Security card. For a new job, you can also use unrestricted social security card + driver license to fulfill the I-9/E-verify requirements. Here is more information on this:

Okay, to apply for the unrestricted one is it the same form like the usual one? Will i have to send a copy of ssn? I read the topic but cannot understand which option to choose

So, here's what happened. I called USCIS again and the customer service told me that they  have responded to my e-request and sent out a mail yesterday and the mail is not the receipt notice, it just says my case is received and we are processing your case. I was so surprised and mad and then customer service connected me with an immigration officer and the lady told me the online system misunderstood my request and sent out the mail of my case status. The lady submitted a follow-up mail saying that I need an extension letter .

• I would recommend going to the Social Security office in person rather than sending documents via mail.
• You would need to complete Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card) and take all the supporting documents (Passport, Original 2yr GC, Driver License, Previous original SSN card). For Question 5 you would select "Legal Alien allowed to work" & select "Yes" for Question 11

• Tell them that you want to update your work status on your SSN card since you are now a Permanent Resident & get an updated SSN card

I applied for this soon after I got my conditional GC and I got my new SSN card in around 2 weeks.

Received an email this morning stating 

" We are still reviewing your case and there are no updates at this time  We will notify you when your case status changes. We last took action on your case on January 30, 2019." 

 

My next step is my biometrics appointment on march 1st 2019...

Quick update:

 

I can now track my case status on older version of USCIS website and ironically, older version provided me upto date info whereas newer version still says, your case received with no updated info

Update: Today I got the following email response from USCIS for my e-request:

 

"The status of this service request is:

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) records indicate your Receipt Notice was never initially ordered.  We have requested the notice be sent to the address listed in our systems. You should receive it within 10-14 business days."

 

Hoping to get my NOA1 (extension) letter soon.
