Is G-1145 Needed With I-130

I know the form is optional, but if I want to get email notifications about my case, do I submit the G-1145 with I-130? I remember reading conflicting reports here about it. Some say it's no longer needed as, they now ask for your email in the I-130. Others say, you should have if you want email communication. Please advise. Thanks

Send it, AND also register for email updates once you have your case number.

After the original letter (NOA1)  all our messages came by email

even the interview info and bar code letter to take to interview

I doubt your NOA2 came ONLY by email.  Everything after the approval notice is coming from Dept. of State, not USCIS, and has been all email for quite some time now.
