Or that victory can be achieved by alienating the people you are trying to save.

Its not the first time this sort of thing has been attempted and its rarely worked in the past. Israel has tried for years to eliminate terrorism with force. I guess everyone can judge for themselves how successful that approach has been.

So what is the solution? Any radical group that wants to win just inflicts casualties and we let them go? It seems with you that letting them have their way is the best solution. Unless you can give me a better solution that seems to be what you are advocating.

I don't think there are any quick and easy solutions.

So that is why I have the position I expound. We cannot win a "clean" victory because we are being forced into a "dirty" war. So our only choices are these: Fight back in whatever way we can and take the heat or give up. Given those choices I choose to fight back and try to minimize the civilian casualties. There is no magic bullet to win without causing others to label us the aggressor or without causing some human rights violations and civilian deaths. I wish there were a better solution but as you say there are no "quick and easy solutions". It is the cards we have to play and at the moment the terrorists are dealing. It's play or fold time. I say play.

Those options only seem to apply to other parts of the world - with deprived peoples that noone seems to really mind being subject to collateral damage.

The underlying resentment that causes this kind of behaviour has always been there, and is only exacerbated by further violence - how exactly are we supposed to change that? By blowing up enough people that they all change their minds?

Or by walking away and letting the radical groups take over a particular country? It happened in Afghanistan and it can happen in other countries as well.

Well Afghanistan had help - which shaped the aftermath of the Soviet Occupation. And noone seemed too bothered about that because the country was so fukced that it had little of anything than anybody wanted.
