International travel after AOS interview and before AOS decision made (AP about to expire)

Hello everyone! I hope to travel to my home country early February due to family issues, but I am not sure whether it is prudent to do it...

Here is the situation:

  • I had my AOS interview over 3 weeks ago. Everything was fine, but a decision could not be made.
  • My EAD and AP will expire mid February 2019.
  • I have filed renewal of EAD and AP almost 4 months ago.

On VJ here, I have seen people being denied when they were out of the US before their interview because, e.g., they missed their interview or they didn't respond to a RFE. I was wondering what are the chances that the AOS is denied after their interview. Was there any way to prevent this from happening? Please share your thoughts and experiences :)

Thanks!!!!!

Can it happen?  Yes.  Depending on your supporting evidence, how the interview went, case details, etc. is what will make an approval or a denial.

Not uncommon to receive this even after the best interview.  What does your online status say?  What did the IO say at the end of the interview (if anything) about whether you were recommended for approval or not?

We provided all the evidence that the IO requested, e.g., joint financial, photos. We think the interview could not have gone better. The IO updated I485 with a pen, e.g., new address.

My online status is still:

Interview Was Scheduled

On October 16, 2018, we scheduled an interview for your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, ......

At the end, the IO just said something like they will need to do more background checks or review. They have up to 120 days before I can make a case inquiry.

The written interview result notice states that they cannot complete my case at this time. My case is being continued until a final decision can be made.

Further explanation: My case is held for review. At this time, USCIS does not need any further information or documents from me. Should further information or documents be required, I will receive an RFE. They may schedule me for another interview and I will receive a notice in the mail. Otherwise, a final decision will be mailed to me.
