Potential errors on green card - what should I do?

Hi,

I just received my green card 3 weeks ago. However, the way they listed my name on the card concerns me.

For example, my previous name was James Kingsley (only first and last, no middle name).

When I got married I took my partners last name.

Now my legal name is James (first) Kingsley (middle) Jones (last).

That's how I list my name on all my application forms (i-485, i-131, i-130, i-765).

On my green card, there are only 'Surname' and 'Given Name', where they listed my surname correctly (Jones). But under given name they wrote 'James K'. I wonder if that creates any problem for me? As K is my middle initial, would people falsifying that as part of my first name, and question me when I travel?

For people who got their green cards recently, do you have your full middle names listed on the card?

More importantly, for those who received their green cards recently, do you have your full middle name on the card?

Thanks in advance! My attorney suggested filing a i-90 and USCIS to list my full middle name instead, but my green card is a temporary one, which needs condition removal in 2 years anyway, so I would prefer not to go through the hassle of filing i-90.

Thanks in advance!

My husband has 2 middle names and I just checked his GC and it lists his first name and only the initial of his "first" middle name.  You should be fine.

5/7/14?? - Attorney mailed paperwork

5/15/14 DHS cashed check

5/19/14 - NOA1 received with PD 5/12/14

3/9/15 - Called NVC and they have checklisted us for an "incorrect" decree absolute from the UK, even though it is the legal official document. Have requested a supervisor review.

4/28/15 - Called and NVC said supervisor had reviewed and now claimed that the decree absolute was not included. After disagreeing with the less than helpful lady on the phone, and her not being able to get the review time right. (She kept changing her story between 42 days and 30 days).

4/30/15 - Sent the same copy of the decree absolute to the NVC from the UK, highlighting the "decree absolute" wording with a letter stating that this is the only document provided by the UK government.

Whats kinda confusing me is, that you put your old name as the middle name now?

I mean idk how it is in the US but if you marry in germany and keep your previous name, then they both count as Surnames. Like Kingsley-Jones etc.

@Toastbear some countries do it that way, I’m from the Philippines and when I got married my last name when I was single now becomes my middle name after I got married.

As of 2016, No, you could NOT do that according to the Social Security name change rules. You could literally have ANY OTHER combination of last names on the marriage license, but you could not change your middle name. So maybe that has changed in the last two years?

Is your full middle name on the code on the back side? In the image below "Void" is the middle name. On the front its represented as "V". On the code on the back its listed as "Void".

I assume each county has their own rules. In the county I applied for marriage license, I could literally put anything there as my new name. First name, middle name, last name, I could change all of them. I have friends who got completely new names after getting married.

Sure, that's why I said with SSA that you can't do that.

In Malaysia, your father's FIRST name is your LAST name. And your FIRST name then becomes your child's LAST name.  Every country has their own way of assigning names.

We considered making my husband's last name my middle name and then he would take my last name. Then, we chose to live our names as they are.
