Name Changes

Hi everyone! 

 

Everything has been smooth so far in this process, but there is one thing that bothers me. 

If I the beneficiary keep my maiden name and get SSN, Drivers license, etc. in that name 

in some years decide to change last name to my spouse's or to do a double last name, would that be possible? 

To my understanding, the marriage certificate will have the maiden name, but I know

the AOS papers will also have that which could make it complicated? Since the green card

will have that last name. 

 

Hopefully someone can share some experiences.

At the time you make the decision you would go to your county court house and fill out paperwork to have your name changed legally then you would get with USCIS to change it, With the court order you can change your documents, Get multiple certified copies for your future use,

In today's world, many, many new spouses never change their name.  There is certainly no legal requirement to do so.  In our case, it has made things so very much more simple for my wife to keep her name (maiden name).  However, I can certainly understand a person choosing to do either.

As to the immigration process, if you decide to pursue naturalization then you can pursue a legal name change option at that time.  If not, and you want to change your name later, I think you would need to do it through a court.

Thank you so much for sharing that info! Was not aware of that, that is also an option then.
