Hello Everyone,

Not sure where to ask this so If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

My attorney advise me to file for Citizenship as a 5 year resident and not threw marriage since we filed Taxes married but separately and he thinks that would be a red flag even we are still married.

My Question and concern is do I have to get divorced before I filed as 5 year resident so it want me suspicious why I haven't filed threw marriage?

01/14/2020 - filed N400 Miami FL

01/18/2020 - NOA Biometric scheduled

03/13/2020 - Interview scheduled - canceled due Covid19

08/19/2020 - Interview

08/27/2020 - OATH Ceremony MIAMI FL

Hey everyone! Just popping in to say hi and congrats to everyone who has gotten their interviews and oaths done with! We’re still waiting patiently. Online portal says November 2019 completion date, but I’m taking that with a grain of salt. I’m at Hartford, CT field office.

Quick question: Our 18 month PR extension from I-751 expires in August. I called the USCIS hotline to inquire about what we should do. They said to call them back about a month out, and they would schedule an appointment at the field office for another extension. Anybody have experience with this process? Is it as easy as it sounds? How long of an extension do they give?

If you file through 5 year, you don’t need to get a divorce.  😐  There won’t be any suspicion of why you didn’t file sooner.  The question may come up, but not every permanent resident wants to become a citizen.  They may wait to apply because of financial reasons, not wanting to take the oath, not wanting to jeopardize their citizenship in their home country.  Only get divorced if you need to, but not for immigration purposes (may the divorce not be necessary!)

Thank You,

I was concerned because  people who went threw Interview they were like :"Oh but you will be suspicious and they will ask why you didn't do it earlier and etc.."

It's just because my lawyer told me to wait until 5 year resident its better to apply for Citizenship.

Thank You

😀 I went online late last night and vou found my ceremony date waiting there for me. (no notifications for me)

🙋‍♀️  4th July 2019 @ Sauder Villiage OH, where they have it each year.  Quite cool as on the 1st Jul is our wedding anniversary.

Good luck to all those waiting. My journey hasn't been a pleasant one for various of reasons. 4 days shy of 7 months from start to finish.  🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

@hobbitspouse How was your interview yesterday ?

The interview went well. It was a bit harder than I thought it would be but still easy. Few pointers that I'd like to share:

  • Sign-in logistics in Chicago:
    • You get to the receptionist window, and hand out your interview letter
    • She asks you if you have a lawyer present (I did not and I never have used any legal services)
    • You get a door number and a numbering position
    • I waited around 30 minutes until my number was called. My interview was scheduled at 9:00AM and I got there at 8:30AM.
  • My spouse was not required to attend. I saw other spouses at the seating area waiting for their SO to come out of the interview, but I still asked my spouse to walk with me when my number was called. The interview officer (IO) told us that only the applicant was needed and that the spouse would be called if required. I think it was good for the officer to see my spouse there.
  • I walk into the IO's office and IO  gives name and position
  • IO requests all documentation required, I only brought the info that was in the interview letter - nothing else except my IRS transcripts for the latest year since we applied in December.
  • The IO starts the interview by asking personal information questions (Name, DOB, etc.) then proceeds to ask about my marriage
  • After all personal info questions are complete- the IO then starts the Civic test
  • Civic Test & English Verbal/Written
    • The test is verbal and no multiple answers are given. You must say the answer. This is something I didn't know but granted I guess I did not do my due diligence. I was overly comfortable (complacent)
    • The IO will ask 10 questions, of which, 6 must be correct to pass
    • The IO had an accent and was very stern and serious which made me uneasy, IO asked 7 questions and I got 6 correct on the 7th and I passed. No need for more questions.
    • The English test is an easy sentence you must read and write on an iPad. IO asked me twice to make it legible but whatever, my handwriting sucks
    • Both passed
  • After the tests, IO proceeds to ask questions about my travel. And finishes the interview with the slew of questions that you get on the interview application (Are you a terrorist, communist, drugs, etc.)
  • I signed some other stuff on the iPad (don't remember what exactly) but I did read "Immigration Status for "Hobbitspouse" - U.S. Citizen
  • After that , the IO smiled for the first time and told me that I passed, gave me a letter and told me to wait for my oath ceremony invitation
  • Online application portal changed a day or two later

The only advice I have is to practice the questions with someone verbally asking you without having multiple choice answers. Other than that, the interview went as expected. I got out of there 45 minutes after I was called in. Celebrated with a good cold american beer. Cheers and good luck.

As my immigration process nears completion, I want to take a moment to thank everyone that participates in this forum. The information shared has made this journey unbelievably less stressful and it gave me the confidence to conduct it without any assistance whatsoever. Although this account is new, I have been an active member for over ten years when I first came definitively to the United States. I have made an effort to share as much as I can and to give back as I have taken. I actively recommend this site to anyone going through hazy immigration procedures. Thank you everyone and thank you VisaJourney.
