My husband applied for his SSN on 12/24, and his I-94 expires on 1/31/2019

i went to the SSN office today (1/17/2019) bc the case status said it had been returned to the agency. Not a surprise..! They told me his SSN has not been approved yet and won’t be approved bc his I-94 is expired. I corrected them and told them it is not expired yet. And they said his SSN has not been approved bc his form will be expired by then and he needs to “reapply” for a i-94, green card, or work permit.

I assume this means we just need to now wait for his employment authorization permit to be approved now before he gets a SSN😩😩🤔😐

Go back and talk to a supervisor. If the Save status says that they have his application there and just refuse to look for it. You're cutting it close though. They dont have to do anything past Day 76.

I told them that the website said it was back at the agency and that’s why I was here. And they asked for his name and that’s when they told me that. 🤔 they even asked me how we knew it was back at the agency and i told them what site stated it . 🤔

And he entered 11/3 so it’s 74 days I believe . Uhh idk what to do.

I have seen many members state that the agent that was helping them had no clue wt_ Save CheckCase was. Print out a screen shot of the Save screen. Show them the I94 record number matches the I94 verification number on the Save entry. Ask them why they have no record for it being returned. Ask them to show you how they know it hasnt been returned. If you applied at the beginning of December its only supposed to take 3 weeks max in Manual Verification. SSA told you that. Ask to talk to the boss of all bosses.

I follow 5 months worth of AOS filers and this ignorance by the SSA is rampant. At least one of us has to get through to them.

This is true and frustrating fact. I do have a question though, since I was here in the USA back in 2009 as J1 visa, and after searching and searching for my papers then, I actually found my SSN in one of my paperwork. And from what I know, whatever they assign you in the SSN before, it will be your SSN forever. Now can I go ahead and bring this number to my local SSA and just request for a name change?

Good question but the answer is "I doubt it" and the reason I figure is this...

We really dont know WHEN in the process DHS updates our name to our married name into their system OR if it is an actual rule that SSA will only update our name once our EAD or GC is approved. Or does SSA just say that they cannot issue one in our married name until our immigration status has changed ? Or can SSA update our name when DHS has updated our name in the system (whenever that may be...)?

We have all seen the lucky applicants who were apparently allowed to change their name on their card while their I94 is still valid. Why would that occur? My thinking is it's quite possible that those applicants applied for an SSN in their maiden name right away, got married right away, filed AOS right away, DHS updated their name right away and they still had plenty of time left on their valid legal status before their I94 expired. That is my only explanation of why some are able to change their name and some are not. (Other than some SSA agents dont give a flying F and just do it, right?)

So in your case, my guess is they are going to say, "No, you dont have legal status any more" or in fact, that DHS has not updated your name in their system even if you've applied for AOS a long time ago which MAY be the case.

This is all speculation of course but if you really think about it may be some of the reasons why we have to wait.

I WILL tell you to try though. Go back and see what they say. Ask them why your married name has not been updated yet with DHS seeing that you applied (AND received an NOA1 receipt notice in your married name for AOS) so long ago. See what excuse they give you knowing what I have said above COULD be a possiblity that has not been disclosed.

Hey guys, quick question, is there a way to tell which office my cases went to? specifically employment authorization. as far as I understand, they all end up in national benefits center, but do they get sent to local offices? e.g. California?

EAD/AP is processed and issued by the NBC.

AOS is initially processed at the NBC and then sent to your local field office once ready to be scheduled for an interview.

You can find your LFO here by inputting your zip code:

https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-uscis-office/field-offices

And you can find the estimated processing times of your LFO here if you input I485 and your LFO:

https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/

Thank you! I'll go to the office and check :)

I'm going through the exact same problems with SSN office!!
I've been waiting almost 11 weeks now, each time i go back into the office they keep telling me its not been approved..

I even managed to speak to a representative from USCIS Save Program who told me that SSN had sent 3 manual verification and each time USCIS had replied to approve my information; i printed out my SAVE sheet which showed it'd be returned to agency and SSN office just keep saying that they are awaiting verification from USCIS and can't approve 😡😡😡

So frustrating!! As my i-94 is close to expiring I now need to wait until i get my EAD or GC.

Someone previously mentioned about getting a 'denial' notice from SSN office; can i ask what the importance of this is? (I don't want any further delays when i'm applying for a SSN with either my EAD OR GC)

Sometimes an SSN denial notice can be used in lieu of an SSN. Banking, education, health care, ID in some states. It varies.

I was the one that brought it up and to me it's not about actually getting the denial notice because I have no use for it but moreso that SSA is obligated to issue one when they refuse your SSN application.

Thank you! I was just curious why USCIS website shows 5 different offices apart from NBC when you get estimates
