I do have another question though this may be on a different thread but I'm just wondering if anybody is experiencing the same as me about SSN. I arrived in the US November 23, went to SS office on November 28. They told me to wait 4 weeks. It's my 4th week and when I followed up they said my status is still pending with homeland security. I'm confused since I've read and saw some post that SSN comes faster than 4 weeks. Any insight please

The exact same thing is happening to me now! I went to the SS office on November 15th to apply for a SSN. I didn’t hear anything so I went back on December 20th and they told me that it is still pending. They told me that Homeland Security needs to give the application a ‘go’ and then it starts processing...

The bummer thing is my I-94 will be expired by January 30th so hopefully something will happen soon..

You both could have the issue where you applied for SSN too soon.

I recommend people wait 2 weeks after arrival before applying. The consensus on this differs (some did it the next day and were fine) but lately we have seen that people that apply too soon tend to be more likely to be stuck in what is a MANUAL verification with Homeland-- i.e you're looking at a 6-8 weeks wait.

The other issue is that typically, you can't be given an SSN if it's too close to when your I-94 expires.
so I think both of you have to wait  it out.

Try a different office if you don't hear in the next week or so. Sometimes, issue is the officer processing your application.

Good luck!

This is a normal occurance. What has happened is called Manual Verification. Tne most common reason it happens is that your I94 name doesnt match what is on file with DHS/USCIS. The reason it doesnt match is because CBP inputs your name as it is displayed on your passport. In most passports your Given name is listed as your First name and Middle names combined whereas USCIS has it listed as the official way as your first name and then middle name sperately. SSA is forced to input your first name as both your first name and middle name combined as they have to input it into their system EXACTLY as CBP has. So when SSA runs you name with DHS it does not match. Then they are forced to turn over to DHS to confirm that you are the same parson applying as that is in DHS's system. That is what is called Manual Verification. It usually only takes a few days to have it verified as correct by DHS and then they send it back to SSA. Unfortunately when it gets there it usually sits on someone's desk for processing.

Check out your passport and I94 @B-B and @decfiler and compare your info to what I have said.

The only thing you can do is keep calling. You can also check the status of the Manual Verification check on a website called SAVE CaseCheck (google it). It will state whether DHS is still reviewing your case or if it has been returned to SSA. If it's been returned to SSA already you have all the more reason to be bugging SSA and can tell them you know your file has been verified by DHS and returned to SSA and can ask why it's not being processed.

Lol, just goes to show how incompetent they are. Call and ask to speak to a supervisor or go in and ask to do the same.

No Maryland is the SSA headquarters. Maryland has nothing to do with it and does not have your case. They would know less than your local SSA. It would have been returned to your local SSA.

Okay. I think its better to go. But the thing is if they are not familiar with save case then they will just tell me to keep waiting. 😑

I highly doubt you will get the same SSA agent if you go again and if you do, ask for a different one and a supervisor. They all can't be stupid.

My I-94 expires on the 10th Jan 2019

Sick of waiting, so yes there is other people having issues with getting SSN.

Manual Verification, more often than not, has to do with a name discrepancy not the fact that your I94 is not in the USCIS system. See my explanation above.
