Yes. But then go again after AOS is approved to remove "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" language. An unrestricted SS card is a great I-9 List C document: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/acceptable-documents/list-documents/form-i-9-acceptable-documents

The EAD card is a Valid for Work document and SSA will remove that restriction, don't need the green card for that.

Not automatically. We all know USCIS is a SILO; a SSA officer (or SSA HQ if manual verification is required) has to check that info matches since only certain people can get unrestricted SS cards; https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/acceptable-documents/who-issued-document:

Quote

Unrestricted Social Security cards that are acceptable List C documents are only issued to:

  • U.S. citizens
  • Noncitizen nationals of the U.S.
  • Lawful permanent residents
  • Refugees
  • Asylees
  • Citizens of the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau admitted under a Compact of Free Association
  • Canadian-born American Indians
  • Mexican-born Kickapoo Indians

EAD is an Employment Authorization Document from USCIS ...   and yes it will require a stop at SSA  to get their system updated to remove the restriction, but a green card is not necessary to get this done.

Yes; either GC or I-551 stamp in foreign passport, NOT EAD.

A person is required to have a valid SSN (unrestricted) to work in the USA ... the I-766 gives this authorization thus status at SSA can now be changed.

From your link

An alien’s status can change for several reasons, including:

1. A nonimmigrant is now allowed to work

Examples:

  • A nonimmigrant, who was not employment authorized and had no valid reason for a non-work SSN, may later obtain and submit evidence of employment authorization from DHS. For example, the applicant submits an Employment Authorization Document (EAD, Form I-766) or an Arrival/Departure Record (Form I-94) showing an employment-authorized class of admission.

Why do you keep posting blatantly incorrect info? A SS card with "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" CAN be used for employment. A SS card with "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" is NOT a List C I-9 document. A SS card with "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" is NOT an unrestricted SS card.

This proves my statement above. You also missed the table titled "c. Legend on SSN card based on evidence of employment authorization"

No they aren't. Many people legally work with a restricted SS card just fine.

My wife's card is restricted. She had used the EAD for her I-9 and provided her SS card/SSN to process payroll.

My wording may not be spot on, but the intent is the accurate.

If you have an SS card with the work restriction on it .. you can't work.    The EAD card negates that restriction, a green card is not necessary to be able to work because of the statement on the SS card.  <<  And that is ALL that is important!

Gotcha now. Yeah, that's correct.

We were noting the SS card itself. There's a "restricted" card and an "unrestricted" card for employment authorization verification purposes on an I-9, which also determines if that text appears on the card or not.
