Hello everyone,

Has anyone come across a situation where after creating an account on https://cgifederal.secure.force.com they cudnt see K1 visa as a visa type or visa class? See the attachment - I do not see K1 visa option anywhere. Even not under non-immigrant visa.

Also, Has anyone's embassy asked to register the address on https://cgifederal.secure.force.com so that Aramex can deliver the passport after the processing.

You should tell them that there's a bug on the website. Just message them on Provide Feedback and they'll get back to you immediately.

I highlighted this to the embassy and they asked me to select any visa type which has actually made me nervous now. How can u select just any visa type. What if at the interview they say that ur application and the visa type u selected on the website doesn't match. Tried calling the embassy but it just goes on answering machine. That's why I wanna know if anyone has come across such a situation at their respective embassies.

Yes we have this scenario in Kuwait.  Probably your Consulate is the same as ours - they don't use the cgifederal system. Ours assigns the interview appointment directly in email (p3 instructions) and then collects the MRV fee payment in-person on the day of the interview.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking ahead to the getting married part of this thing. I kind of want to get married immediately without waiting for the social security card when we arrive to the US. I've read that some people said to wait to get it, but obviously we're impatient. :) @Greenbaum What are your thoughts Mr. Greenbaum?

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, you should get your social security number after 15 days of arrival to the US and before the 90 days period. This only works for the AOS, you can get married without it, actually you will need your passport for that, so you can get married as soon as you arrive! Congratulations 😊

Hi all and @Greenbaum
It's happened, we finally got approved after almost 12 months. But now we've run into another problem. We're trying to change embassies from Thailand to London but missed the mark at uscis. Now it's on it's way to NVC and we're stressed to try and find if and how NVC can change embassies for us. Someone once recommended changing it when doing the DS160, but I doubt this is true. Contacting NVC, they've said they get thousands of e-mails everyday, so getting to ours right when they recieve our case might be a stretch. We're hoping to call and send e-mails every week, is there anything else we can do? :(

My consulate is in Qatar. Yes! I am supposed to pay on the day of the interview.

Did they ask u to register with Aramex or any courier that will deliver the passport to you?

Did they ask you to register your address on cgifederal website?

Is there a way to get social security number as soon as possible once u enter US? Cause the banks do not open an account for u unless u have a SSN.

This will be done at the consulate when they decide what the next step will be.  If they keep the passport then there is an aramex processor there.

If u apply for SSN 1 day then u can go back the next day and ask them to print/give u the number. Sometimes it takes a few tries as not everyone wants to be helpful.

I've read that some people said to wait to get it, but obviously we're impatient. :) @Greenbaum What are your thoughts Mr. Greenbaum?

Getting the SSN after marriage has added a layer of uncertainty to the process. We have seen few who have had success with that but it is always dependent on two factors; the location and the agent. You can go to a SS office the day after you arrive and get the SSN which is much quicker then getting married and then getting the SSN. JMHO

This is what works but you have to have all your "ducks" in a row including the SS document RM10211.530 to use in the event that the SS agent is unfamiliar with the regulations that permit you to have a SSN before your AOS and EAD are adjudicated.

As a K-1 Visa Holder you are eligible to receive a SSN upon producing a valid I-94 (unexpired). Do not wait until you only have a few weeks left until your I-94 expires to file for a SSN. Many SSA (Social Security Administration) offices will not allow you to file for a SSN if your I-94 is about to expire (generally 14 days prior to the expiration on your I-94). On the other hand, you should also not file for a SSN too soon either.

You should wait 1 week after arriving in the US till you are in the SAVE database that you can go the next business day. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet (what is SAVE), and it will require manual verification from the USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe. If you have waited the 2 weeks and they tell you they cannot verify your arrival record via the SAVE database, then personally return on another day to have them search again -- thus eliminating the manual verification (you don't want to do the manual verification as it adds so much more time to the process).

To apply for a SSN you will need to go to your local SSA office and bring the documents below. These documents are proof of your eligibility to file for a SSN:

The SS-5 form  download and complete the application (they have some at the office if you forget).

Your Passport (with the K-1 Visa attached)

Your valid I-94

Another form of valid ID (birth certificate will do nicely)

You should also print and bring the document RM 10211.530 , in the event that the agent is not knowledgeable that K-1/K-2 are eligible to receive a SSN.

https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

Make sure to bring all the documents above because some offices have staff that are not aware that a K-1 Visa Holder is eligible to file for a SSN. A friendly reminder is a nice thing to have -- if not you could be turned away incorrectly

Once you have successfully applied for your SSN, the SSN card will come in the mail in about 2 weeks.

K2 visa holders must first have a work permit (EAD) to get a social security number.

After marriage

Carry your marriage certificate to the social security office to get the social security card in the new name. If you applied for a social security number before marriage, you can go back to the social security office after marriage and get your name changed on your social security card.

The social security card will be marked “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH USCIS AUTHORIZATION”.  That means, you need to get your EAD first before you can actually work.  Hopefully, when you submitted your AOS you included the EAD. If not you will now need to submit the paperwork for an EAD prior to working.

Every embassy ask you to register your address to ensure delivery but not all are directed to Aramex because that company does not service their embassy as they have their own delivery company. The Philippines uses 2go.

If you wish to have your immigrant/fiancée visa file transferred from one Embassy to another U.S. Embassy/Consulate, please contact the appropriate U.S. Embassy/Consulate directly in the country where you wish to apply and follow their instructions for case transfer. Please click here for the full list of all U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas.

The old Embassy will need to receive a formal file transfer request from that U.S. Embassy/Consulate in the country where you wish to apply. Upon receipt of this request, they will immediately forward the file for the New Embassy to process.

If your case goes from embassy to embassy then you won't get a new case number. The case number will began with original alpha nomenclature ie. AAAXXXXXXXXXX for the embassy that NVC has on record.  For you guys that will be Thailand. To make your payment using your old embassy's case number you establish your profile with that case number then you link your payment to your profile.

I hope this doesn't sound convoluted.
