Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with my question:

On the I-134, Affadavit of Support form, section 5, it states, "that I am ready and willing to deposit a bond if necessary" to guarantee that the person I am sponsoring does not become a public charge.

I need to understand this and explain to my co-sponsor and also understand myself.

I am confused about what they mean concerning a bond. Will they require me to deposit an amount of money? And, if they do require me to deposit an amount of money, how much would they ask? This worries and confuses me because it is an ambiguous and not clear statement on that form. By signing this document, does that put me at their mercy to deposit a certain amount of money to guarantee my fiance not becoming a public charge, and can they tell me any amount they wish?

I would really appreciate if someone can help to clarify this for me. Thank you so much.

The bond thing has to do with other types of non immigrant visas when they are being sponsored by a company or other type of organization. The I-134 has other uses other than for K-visas. And also the bank letter is for situations when your income is less than 125% of the povertyline.

In our case this what the I-134 included.

  • I-134 signed and notarized.
  • Tax transcripts from the IRS for past 3 years, (Redundant for the (1040,W2,1099) but are free from the IRS
  • Photo copy of IRS form 1040, and W2s for past 3 years
  • Letter from my employer stating annual salary, job responsibility, and that is full time, on company letterhead.
  • Photo copies of past 6 months pay stubs up to a few weeks before the interview.
