A job loss can happen at anytime.  It could be after your S.O. is already here.

Don't worry, even at 47% of my former income, I don't qualify for public assistance.  In fact, it's not too far below the median income for the USA.

The point I was trying to make, is that circumstances beyond a persons control can cause someone to need assistance with housing ans sustenance.  Let's say for example, you were in an horrific auto accident, and became incapacitated for a significant amount of time, ie more time than your long term disability will cover.  Is it still your opinion that you can't afford your husband or wife?

it probably wouldnt be the right moment in time to bring someone over, no. For MOST people when something like that happens, immigration concerns are not anything they have to deal with as their spouse is HERE and living with them already and (unless they are like my no good for nothing ex) have a job or will FIND a job to support/contribute to the household. you are not tying to make a case to the government that you can support another person.

look, im a borderline socialist, i have NO problem helping people who need it. we SHOULD. however, if you need that help, you probably cant afford any extra mouth to feed, not to mention all the additional costs. The government has to take your personal situation and overall evidence into account for what MAY happen financially for the beneficiary.

im making more now than i EVER have. 18 years ago, I was where OP is now. and I wouldnt have IMAGINED trying to support another person.
