Yea...Hispanics are the largest minority in Texas, but roughly half are illegal aliens. They aren't American and are foreign nationals in our country illegally. They can't legally vote now (but some do anyway thanks to Dems blocking voter ID) and won't be able to vote for many years even if amnestied. What's wrong with this picture? I still don't get it. Cornyn & Hutchison get campaign $$$ continually from the crooks that get rich on the illegals, but they only need our votes every 6 years. They walk the tightrope by living a two-faced existence. I lean more to believing they are pandering to $$$ instead of Hispanic votes (that go to Democrats anyway). They are playing everyone else as suckers.

I think Blacks are getting wise to the fact that the Dems are stabbing them in the back too. The Dems are betting on the amnesty and Hispanics to revitilize the party in the future. I hope it backfires on their sleazy azzes.

Democrat cheap votes vs. Republican cheap labor. Let's see who is sleaziest at our expense.

I'm sorry, but that simply isn't true. Texas is about 35-36% Hispanic, but 5.4-6% of the state's population is estimated to be composed of illegal immigrants from any country. I don't see where you're getting this "roughly half" stat from because it just isn't true.

I can see your point on the rest of it tho.

I probably got that impression from quotes in the Houston Chronicle for the Houston area. Houston's population is roughly 25% foreign born and roughly less than half is illegal aliens. About 10-12% of Houston is illegal aliens. Apparently from your stats Houston is 2X the state average for illegal aliens. Wonderful! I'm so thrilled we're above average. ;)

Another point to consider is that while the illegal alien parents are illegal, their children are counted as US citizens. So illegal immigration's impact on the numbers is somewhat misleading unless you look at the impact on overall demographics. A good chunk of that 35-36% is driven by illegal immigration in one way or another. These people didn't materialize in a generation out of thin air. There is something driving it from external sources. Think about it.

I think it's poor form to assume that the Hispanic community in Texas is a new phenomenon, since it's so OBVIOUSLY wrong. Texas used to belong to Mexico and was part of the state of Coahuila y Tejas; Coahuila still exists in Mexico just south of the US border. The first ethnic group to settle in what is now Texas...after the NAs were driven out/pushed aside...were Hispanics, not white people. I think you'll find that there are many Hispanic families in Texas who can trace their roots in the state...and in the United States...further back than you can. I went to high school with a "Mexican" girl whose family had lived in Texas since before most of my family immigrated to the United States, but people treated her like she was less than a full American because her last name was Herrera.

Also, you can't extrapolate statistics the way you're doing; just because Houston is the largest single city (yet only the second-largest metro area) in Texas does not mean that it is a precise microcosm of the state's ethnic balance or its percentage of illegal immigrants. C'mon, you know better than that.

Sure, there are a lot of illegal Hispanics in Texas. I'd guess that most of Texas's illegals...probably 80%...are from Spanish-speaking countries throughout North and South America. However, you shouldn't make the assumptions you're making about Texas's Hispanic population.

So my Congressman sent us a letter today confirming that we can count on him to oppose this amnesty bill. He was very clear in his letter that he thinks this is about the worst thing the Congress could pass in terms of trying to get illegal immigration under control. I might just vote for Gus next time around.

My two no good Senators won't be able to count on my support anymore.

Why not? During the last amnesty 1986 it was widely quoted that it would only include less than 1 1/2 million...it ended up being close to 3 million.

Now it is widely quoted that the newest amnesty will only include 12 million. Do you really think that is all that would end up jumping on the amnesty wagon? I believe the number is much, much higher.

One thing is sure...I've lived in Texas for 51 years and the huge changes I have seen didn't happen from internal sources.

Yes...I am quite aware that there were Hispanics living in Texas before the current illegal alien invasion. I didn't grow up in a gated community or a nunery.

I turned 11 in 1986, so I wasn't paying very much attention.

12 million is only an estimate, but that is for the country as a whole. As I've said before, Texas's illegal immigrant population is estimated to be between 1 and 1.5 million.

Internal to where? The country or the state? Did you consider that a lot of the demographic changes in the hispanic community could be due to the higher birth rate or are you just assuming that every other Hispanic is an illegal immigrant?

Yes...I am quite aware that there were Hispanics living in Texas before the current illegal alien invasion. I didn't grow up in a gated community or a nunery.

Well good! I didn't either.
