Again I ask, which address is better - DC or local?
IMO - DC is the best when they are in session, however they will be "home" this week.

The mail will be read by staffers either locally or in DC who would then brief the Senators and Congress(wo)men on the feedback from their constituents (or so one hopes).

I cannot believe this amnesty rubbish.. Even Europe out of all places is heavily clamping down on illegal immigration yet here we have a bunch of idiots proposing amnesty for federal law breakers..

The only people who benefit from this is the rich as this supplies an indefinite pool of cheap labor. Whereas the middle and lower class Americans bear the burden of paying for these trespassers. Shame on the senators and politicians who support this.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Remember, given amnesty, they'll be able to get a raise to minimum wage. Shame doesn't go on just the senators and politicians. It also applies to the US citizens who support this amnesty too.

I split my time between Maryland and Colorado and neither is satisfying re this issue. In Maryland, they allow illegals to get driver's licenses and in-state tuition, and produce pamphlets instructing them of their "rights" and how to break the law. In Colorado, my current legal domain, I voted for Allard, who has (unbelievably!) not yet decided how to vote on the bill, and deal with Sens. Salazar snarky and smug staff who respond patronizingly to my phone calls denouncing the bill. On top of that, I currently live in illegal sympathizer Rep. Diana DeGette's district. No one from that office has responded to my repeated attempts to get feedback on my own immigration case. They aren't really into legal immigration, I take it. Oh, and none of my legislators are holding an open house to hear from their constituants during the Memorial Day recess. I'm house hunting in Rep. Tom Tancredo's district right now.

S.1348 is not the bill.

The bill isn't out on Thomas yet (or at least it wasn't last time I checked) but there's a pdf here.

It's scary.

I'm sure your senator will immediately change his/her mind with that sophomoric analysis. Fling open the borders, if not we're not free!

No, I'm not saying we should "fling open the borders."

What I am saying is that we need to allow immigration. The borders are obviously not very well "sealed" at the moment, are they, if we have 12 million illegals? This bill completely disallows immigration. It's going to provide "amnesty" to those who have already come illegally, without providing for the reasons why they came illegally in the first place: there is no legal way for them to immigrate. It's like solving a clog in your plumbing by removing the plumbing without realizing that people still have to poop.

And, btw, assuming that if we did allow free immigration, all of Mexico would just head on over is sophomoric.

I'll also not that neither one of you had anything to say about the rest of my post.

I guess trying to keep out the next generation of immigrations is tradition in the United States once your family is safely over here.

You brought up some good points...don't get too bothered with Homesick's comments - she has a flair for drama.

You're projecting again.

Last year's S.2611 illegal alien amnesty bill (aka: so-called immigration reform) also had Vitter try to add an amendment stripping it of the amnesty provisions. Both Cornyn and Hutchison voted to strip out the amnesty portion and when the amnesty provisions remained, they voted against the bill altogether (which passed anyway and never made it to the House).

So why the change in position this year? Hutchison is safe for 6 more years until 2012 because she was reelected in 2006. Cornyn is up for reelection in 2008 and it will kill his chance for reelection if he supports amnesty. Illegal alien amnesty is not very popular with the majority folks back home in Texas. Bush is not so popular here either. What does supporting illegal aliens do for them? None of these amnestied illegal aliens would ever vote Republican and they are both Republicans.

We can only hope they come to their senses and vote "NAY" if the final amnesty bill comes up to a vote. I still don't get the change of heart here. What's up with that? Can you say, "Flip-Flop"? How about waffle?

As for Clinton and Obama...I'd cast a vote for Charles Manson or Mickey Mouse before I'd vote for them.

I think maybe I'll go to the dentist on election day 2008 so I'll have an excuse to not vote for any of the clowns in the race. I'm still trying to decide which evil is the least of them.

The problem with Texas is its violent demographic shift in the last few years, and the more violent demographic shifts to come. When I was growing up, whites were the largest group in Texas, followed by blacks with Hispanics a distant third. Now, Hispanics have surpassed blacks as the largest minority group in Texas and you can really see the effects of this all over the state. Politicians in Texas are still trying to figure out how best to pander to the Hispanic vote, even if it's not in the best interests of the rest of us. Since when have politicians cared about the rest of us, though?

The demographic shift in favor of Hispanics is causing resentment in some sectors in Texas, but probably not where you would expect it to. Word around the campfire is that a lot of black political groups in Texas are feeling marginalized and sidelined by the Hispanic groups, which have left them in the dust demographically. Give the Hispanics another 20-30 years and they'll be the majority ethnic group in Texas. That has a lot of people nervous, mainly because they're afraid of what's going to change once that happens. People like the status quo; anything else makes them twitchy.

The landscape is definitely changing in Texas, and you're going to see a lot more political strife before the dust settles. It's going to be tough to pin down our politicians on issues like this because they're going to be torn between satisfying their core of supporters and attracting a new constituency that still hasn't shown much major party loyalty. Look for them to break away from the party on a handful of traditional Republican issues...always along racial lines. Republicans have given up on winning over black voters in Texas, but they're still gunning for the Hispanics. If they think it won't piss off their (mostly white) core supporters too much, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see both Cornyn and Hutchison buck the trend on the immigration bill, particularly if private polls show that they'll gain more Hispanic votes than white votes lost.

Yea...Hispanics are the largest minority in Texas, but roughly half are illegal aliens. They aren't American and are foreign nationals in our country illegally. They can't legally vote now (but some do anyway thanks to Dems blocking voter ID) and won't be able to vote for many years even if amnestied. What's wrong with this picture? I still don't get it. Cornyn & Hutchison get campaign $$$ continually from the crooks that get rich on the illegals, but they only need our votes every 6 years. They walk the tightrope by living a two-faced existence. I lean more to believing they are pandering to $$$ instead of Hispanic votes (that go to Democrats anyway). They are playing everyone else as suckers.

I think Blacks are getting wise to the fact that the Dems are stabbing them in the back too. The Dems are betting on the amnesty and Hispanics to revitilize the party in the future. I hope it backfires on their sleazy azzes.

Democrat cheap votes vs. Republican cheap labor. Let's see who is sleaziest at our expense.

The best call to Action and best reform is to Deport all those who Ilegally entered the country, illegally steal; govt, public and other benefits, illegally drive, illegally work. and prosecute employers who hire these federal criminals,

These Illegal criminlas have NO rights to any Path to citzenship or legal status, the only priviliage they are due is a bus ride or plane flight back to where they illegally entered.
