Rebecca, I simply don't agree with sibling green cards because the vast majority of the time they are used for "chain immigration"

And what's wrong with that?

I may be one of the few people on this board who don't think that this bill is such a disaster. I actually support it for the most part. I'm not that resentful of legalization for the illegals, and I certainly oppose chain immigration.

But this is just my opinion.

PERMANENT BAR for an overstay? How is that fair? Think about it.

Interesting that this permanent bar doesn't apply to the illegals. They are about to receive, yet again and to no surprise, preferential treatment. This sort of thing is just outrageous. And then they have the fcuking nerve to say to the American people that this ain't no amnesty. Crooked Bastards!

ITs probably not going to pass anyway. If it does, just feel happy that it is approved now, because in 2009 the illegals will get amnesty, plus benefits, plus any other preference that this bill will not give them. Meanwhile, I'll continue to pay and my wife will continue to wait. By the way, its our fault for marrying somebody from abroad to start with. Remember, the govmint is here to help us.

To all those pro-getting rid of the diversity visa and "chain immigration," I ask you to please go through USCIS's website and tell me a single way a person could immigrate to the US without the diversity visa, or being related to someone here.

For additional kicks, please tell me one way someone without 12 years of education could immigrate to the US.

Note, work visas do NOT count. They are non-immigrant visas.

The simple answer? There is no way. That's why we have so many illegal immigrants: because there is NO WAY for them to immigrate legally. Get rid of the diversity visa, get rid of relative immigration, and you end immigration in the US. There are no other immigrant visas, aside from refugee visas, that I know of. Now, I'm no immigration lawyer, but most other visas I see are non-immigrant worker visas or visitor visas that allow you to come to the US and work and live for a period of time, all with the expectation that you return to your country of origin at the end of that time.

This is #######.

The immigration system in the US does need reform. Most governmental programs, I've noticed, when they undergo "reform" only exacerbate the problem instead of improving it. Scrap it. That's the only solution.

I'll pop by my Senator's office on the way to work tomorrow and tell them I'm against this bill.

Immigration needs to be free, as befits a free society.

Or are we still free anymore?

I'm sure your senator will immediately change his/her mind with that sophomoric analysis. Fling open the borders, if not we're not free!

Jeez! I can imagine if that happened! The Mexican government would love that ideal! The wealth for them would be beyond their wildest dreams!

No, I'm not saying we should "fling open the borders."

What I am saying is that we need to allow immigration. The borders are obviously not very well "sealed" at the moment, are they, if we have 12 million illegals? This bill completely disallows immigration. It's going to provide "amnesty" to those who have already come illegally, without providing for the reasons why they came illegally in the first place: there is no legal way for them to immigrate. It's like solving a clog in your plumbing by removing the plumbing without realizing that people still have to poop.

And, btw, assuming that if we did allow free immigration, all of Mexico would just head on over is sophomoric.

I'll also not that neither one of you had anything to say about the rest of my post.

I guess trying to keep out the next generation of immigrations is tradition in the United States once your family is safely over here.

This is a problem why exactly? You think we should give people Green Cards to anyone who wants them, based purely on a desire to immigrate. If that happened the USA would be overwhelmed with people from every third world country coming here for a better life. That system would just be unworkable.

Name a single country in the world that has such an open border policy.

That's like saying that even though murder is illegal, people are still killing each other so let's make murder legal or give murderers amnesty. I don't see that your logic is necessarily logical.

And, btw, assuming that if we did allow free immigration, all of Mexico would just head on over is sophomoric.

The US would be overwhelmed within 24 hours.

What is there TO say? Everyone here is starting to sound like a broken record.

And there it is, ladies and gentlemen....can't win the argument, play the race card.

What I am saying is that we need to allow immigration.

But what would be your criteria for immigration? On what basis would you give someone a Green Card?

The borders are obviously not very well "sealed" at the moment, are they, if we have 12 million illegals? This bill completely disallows immigration.

No, it assigns a point system to immigration, allowing people with certain skills in immigrate. I can't see what's wrong with this.

It's going to provide "amnesty" to those who have already come illegally, without providing for the reasons why they came illegally in the first place: there is no legal way for them to immigrate.

You need to meet some illegal immigrants some time. I've known quite a few, if you live in California and befriend hispanics its unavoidable. Most of them that I met came here to work and provide money for their families, and not "to immigrate". Therefore a work visa would have been perfect for them. In fact most of them I knew did not plan to remain in the USA, the idea was to earn a bunch of money, and then return. I know this side of the story is never told by the press, who like to peddle the lie that all Mexicans want to permenantly live in the USA, but there you go. I'm speaking from personal experience here.

And, btw, assuming that if we did allow free immigration, all of Mexico would just head on over is sophomoric.

Yes indeed.

I guess trying to keep out the next generation of immigrations is tradition in the United States once your family is safely over here.

Well I came here as a highly skilled worker and remain through marriage to a US citizen, which I personally find to be scandalous. Why you ask? Because the easiest way for me to get a Green Card was through my marriage and not through my work, which to me is wrong. Considering that I've spent 8 years in service to a US Federal Government agency, this makes no sense to me that the only way I really could remain in the USA is because of my wife. Don't get me wrong, I think that spouses of US citizens should get Green Cards, I just also think that smart skilled workers should be able to get a Green Card much more easily than they can right now. Seems that this part of the bill at least is a good thing.
