But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Rebecca, I simply don't agree with sibling green cards because the vast majority of the time they are used for "chain immigration"

And what's wrong with that?

It's my personal opinion. I dont believe that my brother has any right to immigrate to this country just because I have a green card. If he wants to come here he can earn it on his own merits.

I fail to see why this opinion is "wacko", its simply that I believe that immigration is a hard earned privaledge, not a right. This is probably influenced by the fact that I lived here on work visas for 7 years before getting my green card through marriage.

I sent e-mails to my congressman, and my senators. I got a positive e-mail in response to this from one of my senators (Jim DeMint) stating that he was against any bill that would allow amnesty in ANY way to those who arrived here illegally, and he would vote against any such plan. He also stressed the importance of border control.

Let's see if we get any other responses.

Can I just say that every bill that has been proposed in the last few months has included language that does NOT include sending 12 million + people back to wherever they are from. If amnesty means black & white illegals stay, then I don't know how anyone who uses this definition of amnesty will be happy. When talking to rebecca yesterday she made a great point. So far, all bills have included this language. Fine them, give them a path to PR status. Letters to law-makers right now that include statements that are purely focuses on the EWI community (and sending them back by stating NO AMNESTY) are going to be filed away. It's just not going to happen. Focus on the issue that families need to see benefit from the immigration reform. I said it yesterday in the other thread : all this intense focus on the EWI community is driving the focus away from family unification.

thanks to everyone who have taken the time to tell their reps how they feel! :star:

Sorry but I think that the fundamental flaw of the proposed legislation (besides the already discussed family issues) is that those that came and stayed here illegally will be offered the opportunity to stay and work here as long as they wish - indefinitely, really, while those that stand and stood in line for a work opportunity are going to be limited to X terms of X years with mandatory leave times in between. That is one central aspect that I fundamentally oppose in this construct. At the very least, those that came and stayed illegally should get in the same line as all those that chose and choose to respect our laws and our country. They ought not to receive any preferrential treatment. I will oppose any bill that grants them such.

I agree with you, ET, it would be a huge slap in my family's face if after dealing with immigration for 3 years and no greencard in sight while EWI's are granted PR status with relative ease. This motivates me to promote the family unification aspect of the reform.

Deport all illegal immigrants to their country, and let thei government shoulder the welfare of their countrymen. Definitely, NO to the proposed amnesty.

I am also proposing that Congress shall review this "jus soli" or the "right of soil" when it comes to citizenship. There must be some restrictions, as most of the illegal immigrants are engaged to a massive reproduction of babies.

If the US government is really serious in minimizing, if not totally eradicating illegal immigration, therefore they must secure the border, start the massive (legitimate) arrest and deportation.

The PR status is not that easy for the EWI's and other illegals to come by. You're looking at upwards of 10 years at least before any of them can get there. That's what allows the supporters of this amnesty to say that it ain't one. Yet this "Z visa" effectively allows them to live and work here indefinitely while those that pursued and continue to pursue legal avenues are limited to X terms of X years depending on visa type. The only way to be eligible for this Z-visa that can be renewed time and again every 4 years until one takes his last breath is to have been here illegally prior to Jan 1, 2007. The only way to qualify for this visa that many foreign workers would love to have is to have broken the law. That's wrong no matter how one slices it.

Reinhard....I don't like it either. But it's SO unlikely they are going to be sent back. If for no other reason than it's an impossible task.

At this point, all I see we can do is try to make sure they don't punish families by trying to stop the EWI flow. If we allow them to chip away at this, it's only their first stroke. It will keep snowballing.

I'm not saying you are wrong. Fundamentally I agree with you. But this bill is so cocked up it stands to do FAR more damage to the future of immigration than it can possibly fix. Our focus has to change. It might be unpleasant but I believe it's our only choice.

From a purely philosophical and (perhaps) starry-eyed perspective, I'm so upset our country would take this path, it sickens me. GW and his 'family values' talk is nothing more than that - cheap talk. This bill is final testament to that, IMO. Family doesn't stop with white-on-white or native born Americans. Family crosses that - everyone in this community is a testament to it.

I am not talking about sending anyone back. I am talking about enforcing the law, holding employers accountable for who they hire and not offering any immigration benefit to those that have broken our laws that a law-abiding person is not eligible for.

If the entire focus of the opposition to this proposal is on maintaining the immigration avenues for family members, correcting the current imbalance at the expense of the family may just become enough to ram this amnesty through the Congress. I am not about to let them fool me like that.
