I agree do not snail mail.

Shockingly poor advice, in my opinion. A hand written, USPS delivered letter is worth a 1000 emails or online petitions. If you stick a letter in your mailbox today its going to get to your Senator this week, its not like this bill is going to be passed tomorrow.

I completely agree, LHA

the point was in this very specific situation, we want law-makers to know exactly what we feel as soon as possible. there are e-forms online for every senator AFAIK. sorry you found it mis-informational.

No no no, don't misunderstand.

I don't think it should be snail mail vs. email. Obviously time is a factor, therefore email is best...however, there is enough time to bombard our senators with the bs of a paper trail.

'in addition to'!

This is total BS:

....

  • The Diversity Lottery Program, which grants 50,000 green cards per year through random chance, is ended.

Is it? The Green Card Lottery is total BS IMHO. Why should people get Green Cards purely due to random chance?

I agree here. The diversity lottery might have been good PR for the US, but what the hell is the point otherwise? We're already pretty diverse...

The Diversity Lottery sends the message to the world that the U.S. is a country

of immigrants, which wants more immigrants and welcomes everyone -- not a

country of bigoted immigrant haters that I see on this board.

Do you know what goes on out there with DV visa chances? There are brokers out there that live off of those. Whatever the intention of the DV program, there's so much fraud and abuse in that system that I think it's rather wise to put away with it.

I don't buy it. You don't need a broker to apply for a lottery visa -- anyone can do it online

at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov/.

Anyway, if "fraud" is the main reason you want to cancel it, why not just go after the

fraudsters? Make it illegal to act as a broker for the DV lottery program.

Should we get rid of all credit cards too because there's so much fraud and abuse?

Oh c'mon. The DV isn't such a great visa, regardless of if it's fraught with fraud or not. People from other countries can see that we welcome immigrants who are able to work here through our other visas.

I don't think I missed the point, Lisa. I've seen the results of Gupt's poll.

Most people here don't want to see any more immigrants (except of course

"their immigrants".)

And THAT's a shame!

It's not the entry into the lotter part, my friend. It's those that got a chance for a ticket (the first draw). They have at least a second chance one to sell as the "spouse" and the "children" are eligible to join. Let your fantasy play this one out. Or check when DV beneficiaries actually got married. Yoy'll find that a lot of those marriages occured after the first draw but before the actual application for the visa. You'd also find that those "marriages" don't last very long... ;)

 I don't know why so many people on VJ are so xenophobic. You'd think the world travel would have helped a bit with that.

Hrmm, didn't see the poll...but I think the views in this thread, and the countless other ones voice a problem with the 'illegal' part...not the 'immigrant' part.

I welcome all legal immigrants...couldn't care less where they're from, so long as they're legal.

And I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way.

Who cares, it's a lottery! There are only ~50,000 visas available, regardless of to whom they are issued.

Do you care if it's 2 random people vs. 1 random person and his random girlfriend / fake wife?
