simple talking points as provided by AFU lobbyists: you do not necessarily have to be specific, the bill is not set to be on Thomas until monday, so what we have is the outline provided on USCIS website HERE. You do not need actual bill language to be outraged at what is proposed here. Please consider the following:

* There is a rising groundswell of opposition to THIS bill from people

who WANT immigration reform because this is not REFORM.

* This bill is a disaster for American families. Nuclear families get

nothing to help them unite and stay together.

* This bill is unfair to citizens, who are treated less generously than

temporary workers in bringing their families.

* This bill punishes LEGAL immigrants, who have played by the rules and

made a commitment to America, by keeping them separated from their

spouses and children.

* We support an amendment to uphold the value Americans place on

families by bringing them together and keeping them together.

* We hope that you will too.

Very good.

I'd add the point that the suggestion that is is not an amnesty is dishonest at best.

This is total BS:

  • Visas for parents of U.S. citizens are capped, while green cards for the siblings and adult children of U.S. citizens and green card holders are eliminated.
  • A new Parents Visitor visa is created to ensure that parents are allowed to visit their children in the United States regularly and for extended periods of time.
  • The Diversity Lottery Program, which grants 50,000 green cards per year through random chance, is ended.

Ok so hit em up LisaD style or should I tone it down and be all sweetness and whatnot?

lol - when i was going through my debacle of a K1, yeah i did the hit 'em up lal style and I didnt really make any friends. Best suggestion is to not nag, irritate, be kind and personable. I wasnt so during my K1 and I regret it.

I signed the AFU petition and sent it on to my friends and family.

Thank you LisaD for offering to draft a letter. I will definitely email my senators tonight and call Monday morning. I used to advise an Amnesty International chapter, so I think they're already both familiar with me ;-) Hee Hee.

May I suggest that in addition to what lal and ET added that the letter also include some mention of the fact that skilled workers and US employers will also be hurt if this bill passes?

It really is a shame that this bill should even be out there.

Yes, I'm quoting myself b/c I can't figure out how to edit. I just read the proposals in the bills, and I suppose that there are some good things that could come out of this bill, but one part that does disturb me is the temporary workers section. It will be limited to three 2 year terms? With a year outside in between each term. Ok. But the fact that they can bring their families with them disturbs me. We can't even have our fiances or spouses here with us while we are awaiting approval of visas in some cases, not to mention children and parents.

I'm done complaining now ;-)

I have no problem with ending the DV lottery. As long as that goes in favor of families.

The cap for parents is BS. As to the new parent visitor visa: #######?

Don't mail letters to Congress snailmail. Time is impt and email gets through. Because of the anthrax on Congress a few years ago, paper mail is thoroughly screened and that entails delays -- which is a bad idea for an issue on a fasttrack like this one.

Your email doesn't need to be long, really heavily detailed. You can simply state that you oppose the proposed reforms and believe that family unity should continue to be a center feature of immigration law. A few sentences will get the message across. You can find you House members at

www.house.gov

and your senators at

www.senate.gov

I wrote my three guys last night -- and encourage all of you who have strong opinions on this issue to write today.
