Unfortunately, you won't be able tp get an SSN until you have an EAD (or green card) now. I don't know what the issue was that required manual verification, but the timeline for eligibility for an SSN is now expired so that's all in the past now.

We are quite exasperated and outraged this morning. My then-fiance entered the US on August 22 using his K-1 Visa. We applied for his SSN on September 10th and were told to wait four weeks. We waited and waited. We went back to the SSA in mid-October and were told that there had been a hang-up in the system somewhere and that we could expect his SSN in two weeks. On November 9th we received a letter dated November 1st saying it was an acknowledgement that he'd applied on September 10th and that he would have his SSN in two weeks. Then yesterday we received a letter dated November 7th saying that his SSN was being denied because his K-1 Visa was going to expire on the 19th!

We married on October 20th and sent in his I-485 to adjust status telling them that we'd already applied for an SSN but that we hadn't received a number yet.

We are at a loss for what to do. Are we really stuck waiting for an SSN until he gets his conditional green card in 6+ months?

Unfortunately what it sounds like is that the SSA office you went to screwed up. Did you bring your I94 to the office (and I assume check that your then-fiancé was listed in the database?), and could you determine if the SSA official at the desk could find them in their database? The four week thing is usually a catchall when they simply aren't doing something right or can't find you listed so it requires manual verification (good luck with that.. usually begins problems and delays as you can see). By the time you attempted to resolve it unfortunately regulations would then prevent the issuance of the SSN as the K1 was about to expire (there is a cutoff date for K1s).

Your next best way to try will be when the EAD arrives. That's all you can do for now.

Yes, we had everything as far as I could tell. (I haul around half my filing cabinet in his immigration folder, I think.) He should have been in the system and his I-94 was correct and up to date. From speaking to the second worker who tried his best to sort things for us in October, it was a problem with his middle name. (*sigh*) ... And he only has one middle name even!

We'll just wait for the EAD and try that way. There really isn't much to be done with what happened in the past and all his AOS forms have now been submitted so we'll just keep pushing forward.

Don't carry your SSN paper with you. Put it to a safe place. Learn the number. There are few cases when you actually need to show the card. It's enough if you know the number.

We applied for my then fiances social security card 6 days after he arrived (9/21). He was told they could not find him in the system and to come back after 2 weeks. We went back about a month later (10/23) now married and they said he was still not in the system and they would need to send his application to USCIS for manual verification.  We provided his passport/visa and I94. Last week I received a voicemail from social security stating USCIS responded and said he has temporary work authorization and we must bring in his I776 (EAD). When I called today they fed me a line if bullshit. I'm just going to apply for the card when I file his I765. They have me fed up.

It seems crazy!! I got mine in my first month, granted they needed manual verification from USCIS. Mine says temporary work authorisation on it. Maryland posted mine out, which I think is their HQ.  I just wanted to align it to the 30 window period to be added to Jakes health insurance after we married on 10/31. Super crazy. People have so many differing experiences-most unpleasant albeit

A few of my friends got theirs no problem.  I went in there totally informed and prepared and they still found a way to screw us over.

Really there is no need to carry it around with you.  In fact, it is better if you don't.  I can't think of an occasion when I have had to show the actual card.  Most Americans memorize it and keep the original paper card in a file folder or something.

My SSN is the least of my concerns and the last thing I want to carry around with me. I leave it here at home! It’s only a piece of semi card LOL

I have had mine memorized since I was about 16, and I've made my kids memorize theirs as well.    Btw, I lived in London for a year long ago, and I have spent much time in the UK over the years.  Kids are dual citizens even.  Welcome to the US!  :-)

Anytime you obtain a job? Every job I've worked at required my SSC. I'm not saying every employer requires this (I know they don't), but it is very common for employers to request it.

The IRS manual suggests that employers do so, however it isn't required either (although it may provide some level of protection / plausible deniability if they are found to be employing an unauthorized worker who only provided a name/number to check validity versus them having to present a fraudulent card).

It's also required to obtain a driver's license in my state (no idea about other states).

I'm almost 50, and I've had my driver's license  for 30 + years, so I don't remember.  I have been an RN for 20 years, with only two different jobs during that time.  Didn't have to show it either time.  SSN, yes.  SSC, no.  I have literally not had to show the card since I was in high school.

I'm not doubting you. I'm just saying it's not the norm to never have to show it. Rarely? Sure.
