SSN Denied on K-1 Visa

We are quite exasperated and outraged this morning. My then-fiance entered the US on August 22 using his K-1 Visa. We applied for his SSN on September 10th and were told to wait four weeks. We waited and waited. We went back to the SSA in mid-October and were told that there had been a hang-up in the system somewhere and that we could expect his SSN in two weeks. On November 9th we received a letter dated November 1st saying it was an acknowledgement that he'd applied on September 10th and that he would have his SSN in two weeks. Then yesterday we received a letter dated November 7th saying that his SSN was being denied because his K-1 Visa was going to expire on the 19th!

We married on October 20th and sent in his I-485 to adjust status telling them that we'd already applied for an SSN but that we hadn't received a number yet.

We are at a loss for what to do. Are we really stuck waiting for an SSN until he gets his conditional green card in 6+ months?

You did also send in the I-765 (Employment Authorization Document) form and I-131 (Advance parole) with your I-485 correct?

Poor service as Social Security? Welcome to America lol. Had the same experience pretty much.

I don't quite know the deal with SSA is! I had a thing with them. Apparently, it's uncommon in the US to have 2 middle names and he couldn't fit my name (which really isn't that long) on the system. I furiously responded by asking should I axe out my middle names on my birth certificate to suit their system? Then got sassy by over apologising my mother gave me 2 middle names (which is NOT uncommon in the UK). Anyway, as they couldnt verify my 'massive long winded name' it got sent off to USCIS.

My POE was 10/10 and got social number eventually 3 weeks later. Why aren't them cards plastic anyway??? What an experience social security was! Haha. I wanted to change my surname after I got married over 2 weeks ago but skipped on that as I never want to go there again. SORRY for the rant!!

What's that saying about the only thing saving us from government is the inefficiency of the bureaucracy?

My now-husband goes on about the fact that they aren't!  It's a travesty! Plastic makes way more sense...so they will always be paper. :)

You can apply for ssn with ead as well, if that comes before the gc

Yes, I think we'll go that route.  Thanks for the ideas!

Nearly all cards in the UK are plastic. Its just so much more durable. I know some day I will accidentally leave my SS card in my jeans and wash them! It's just so annoying there is an issue with getting a SSN. Nevada was irritating but eventually got it. Was super aggravated when i left the social security office

Hope you get sorted though :)

We'll get there!

I sat staring at the letter this morning and couldn't think of anything helpful to do as a next step. What I wanted to do was storm down to the closest SSA and give the first worker I saw a piece of my mind. (Which would have gotten me nowhere.)

Rightfully so! You honored the legal system and done the correct route. Plenty of people using the ESTA and then AOS! I know my SSN Application got sent off to Maryland. I wander if contacting them for support may help? I don't have a contact number for them but I do know that's where Las Vegas had to send my application off to in order to verify it with USCIS.
