TRENTON, N.J. — Women looking for a simple way to avoid their menstrual period could soon have access the first birth control pill designed to let women suppress monthly bleeding indefinitely.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expect to announce approval Tuesday for Lybrel, a drug from Wyeth which would be the first pill to be taken continuously.

Lybrel, a name meant to evoke "liberty," would be the fourth new oral contraceptive that doesn't follow the standard schedule of 21 daily active pills, followed by seven sugar pills _ a design meant to mimic a woman's monthly cycle. Among the others, Yaz and Loestrin 24 shorten monthly periods to three days or less and Seasonique, an updated version of Seasonale, reduces them to four times a year.

Gynecologists say they've been seeing a slow but steady increase in women asking how to limit and even stop monthly bleeding. Surveys have found up to half of women would prefer not to have any periods, most would prefer them less often and a majority of doctors have prescribed contraception to prevent periods.

I personally don't like to mess with the chemistry of my body. Hormones regulate everything-body type, mood, sex drive. It all sounds so unnatural and so unhealthy. It can't possibly be good for the body because the body is not designed to never have periods. Periods are a reminder that we are healthy and not pregnant. How many woman now will put their babies in danger because they don't even know they are pregnant and continue to smoke and drink etc?

Being in the medical field I have seen so many woman the get their systems off by messing with their periods. I know it has been common for years to mess with the birth control pills so you don't have a period, however the doctors I have worked for only suggested this if there was something important coming up such as a wedding or vacation. We also had man women that took the Depo shot to get rid of their periods and once they discontinued it to try to become pregnant, it would take them quite a while to conceive. I personally took the Depo for only 1 year then when I did become pregnant, I had 3 miscarriages. My doctor is into a lot of research and he said some of his colleagues told him that one Depo shot could take as long as 18 months to get out of your system! They sure don't show that in the small print!

Anywho, I guess my point is that God wanted women to have a period for a reason and more more medicine screws with it, I think the more health problems woman may have.

As someone who has the depo shot currently and had an IUD previously, I do not bleed at all. For me, it is a blessing. If you believe that God intended women to have periods, rock on. Enjoy them. If, however, your periods are so heavy and so painful that you are unable to function for 4-6 days of every month, you welcome anything which will help.

There are many medically-approved drugs which do damage to a person. My husband has just had an attack of gout, for which they gave him steroids. Those are known to mess up the body also. One could argue that God intended for us to be in pain too, but that's perhaps a point for another topic :)

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

In theory, there would be perfectly healthy pathways to achieve this. For example, when you are exercising a lot, you can stop your period.

I'm just a guy, so I don't really understand, but I certainly notice a major change in my wife for about 4 days or so. I does seem to generally suck overall, though, so I wish you the best of luck! I look forward to the sperm reduction pills coming out - the world's population will drop substantially! :P

( Funny story... Many times, when I'm taking an elevator while holding our baby, a young couple would get on. BKK has really tall buildings and you can be in the elevator for a while - and often the woman would look @ the baby and get on look her face going "I WANT ONE" ... her boyfriend would suddenly start glancing @ the floor buttons and get a look on his face like "This floors fine. We can walk the other 30 floors..." )

Your absence runs through me like a needle
