What is the benefits of catnip for the cats? Is it ok to give them all the time?

It can encourage them to play, providing exercise. Not all cats respond to catnip, but those that do often go nuts around it :P

As mentioned before not all cats respond to catnip, and most cats that will respond don't tend to do so until they are around 9 months of age.

I use it for my cats all the time; they love it. Plus it is adorable to watch them rolling around on the floor, purring up a storm! Junkie kittys! :luv:

Hi Luz,

They are sure growing up into adorable adolescent kitties - hehehe, I hate to say it but they will continue to be active for a LONG time to come VBG. My 5 year old brothers still play tag and wrestle with each other as well as with my 14 year old. They will slow down a bit, but it will take quite some time.

Catnip will make them really playful for a bit - about 10 to 15 minutes - then they will probably doze. I grow it in our back garden and bring them in fresh plants which they love. They eat the leaves, roll around with them, look absolutely ridiculous for a while, then fall asleep:-). Catnip filled toys are excellent to keep them active and to develop their 'hunting' skills as well.

The best way to train cats is to make it easier for them to do what you want than what they want. Providing them with other 'high' surfaces that they can climb up on will make the table less attractive, however cats do have an attraction to high places so will try to jump up on tables and counters - and cupboard tops as well as the top of the fridge. It is difficult to train out of them because a lot of it is an instinctive need to get up high.

Ours are not allowed on the table while there is food on it or while we are eating, but because I can't control them when we are not here, they do get up on these surfaces at other times. I only have 2 who end up on the counters though, and that is really only because they use it to leap from there up to the top of the cupboards. One of mine actually jumps from the ground up to my shoulder while I am working in the kitchen and watches what I am doing while draped across my shoulder. My husband thinks it is hilarious and the cat thinks it is perfectly appropriate! They do know where they are not allowed to go. However, when they want something they will deliberately go where they are not allowed because they know it will get my attention. They have me very well trained!

I'll second that Mags

Not all cats respond to catnip, my cat back home wouldnt even look twice to a catnip toy. but my cat over here well..................

Catnip drives my cat absolutely stark raving bonkers  she grabs it by her back paws swishes it up into the air knocks it down with her front paws and rolls around the floor with it, she gets so dizzy after a while she runs into the wall exhausted like...hahahaha...poor wee thing just lie's there huffing n puffing until she gets her breath back............. then its basically ding ding........round 2. :goofy:

My hubby and I had many a good night just sitting on the couch without the telly on just watching this daft cat playing with her catnip toy.

She's not right in the head!

Separated!!

Alright, thought Id just continue this instead of making a new thread.

I'm not a cat person, but i like our cat even though it has costed us a little fortune. It was given to us free as a kitten when we lived in an apartment (450 bucks pet deposit-non refundable; vet bills $$$ and whatever stuff Val buys for it).

We have had this cat for over a year and today when I got up it seemd to be really happy, like it had a smile and was all proud of himself. Well the cat (his name mimee) killed a bird and we had feathers all over the living room. I mean all over the living room!! :crying:

Anyway, was kind of funny and though I share with the cat people. :)

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .
