I would hate to think that German would be today's official language of the UK if the USA didn't get involved in WWII and offer it's assistance to get the Nazis to back off from there. What do you think Charles? :D

The Battle of Britain had been fought and won before Pearl Harbor...before the US joined the war. The UK was in no serious danger of being taken over by the Nazis after that.

urgh !!! ... #$%& edit feature and permissions ... sorry, should have said...

lend lease, russia, and don't forget the little moat between the islands and the mainland.

it could have been a lot lonely on the little island(s) without some help ...

Sure, but it's not really a controversial assertion to make that the UK was not in danger of being invaded/taken over by Nazi Germany after the Battle of Britain. They did not depend entirely on the United States for their war effort; they were not completely helpless.

We helped, but I think (along with many others) that the war could have been won without US assistance. It would have taken longer, but it could have been done. That's not to say that they shouldn't be grateful for our assistance. However, I think the 'bend down and kiss our butts because we saved your a$$es in WWII' attitude is ugly.

 Probably some propaganda spoonfed to us in school. Why are we the hero in every single story in the school history books?

Its an ugly attitude only shared by those who did not serve. I've had the great pleasure of speaking to many Americans who served in the UK in WWII and can clearly state that this attitude does not exist and is treated with great distaste amongst those veterans.

Everytime an American says "if it weren't for us you'd be speaking German" I remind them that if it weren't for the fact that most American immigrants came from the UK, Americans would most likely be speaking German right now. After all back in the colonial days, Germans were by far and away the 2nd largest ethnic group in the USA after British. ;)

My hats off to every American man and woman, including myself, who has served in the Armed Forces. There usually comes a time when aid of many countries in the past and present requested needed assistance when it was plagued with a war. Though, it should not have been a concern because the USA and it's citizens were not threatened. And that it was not our war. The Japanese Navy made it as far as Pearl Harbor. The mainland was never in any danger. I can't help but think of all those American soldiers who gave their lives to other countries and to assist them when they were called to duty by our government. But no one is saying, "Bend over and kiss our butts". A little appreciation and respect for those who gave their all!

But no one is saying, "Bend over and kiss our butts".

On the contrary, many Americans have this attitude towards Europeans. Mainly those, as I pointed out above, who did not actually serve.

I can't speak for all Americans. I certainly have a lot of appreciation and respect when visiting another country. I understand the attitude you speak of. I do not have the mindset that, just because I am an American, I am above all other cultures and countries. I've got into actual altercations with other Americans when I am in another country visting and that attitude is displayed by my fellow citizens. Personally, it's ridiculous to be in a visiting country and treating those people very ugly. There's actually quite a bit we could all learn from other countries and cultures. I was surprised at the things I was able to see when I stood on the outside looking inward. It made me appreciate some things even more strong. ;)

I didn't serve, but both my grandfathers did....one as a bomber pilot, the other as infantry. Neither one of them tolerated that kind of talk; they were quick to point out that it was hot, steaming bullsh!t.

I hate this attitude too - as HA and Dr Lha state when Britain's back was well and truly against the wall the US was not in Europe. It would have been easy for the UK to capitulate to Hitler there were many appeasers - fortunately Churchilll was not one of them. How would the US have coped with an Axis power that included all of Europe? Maybe we should be thanking "the few" who fought in the BoB - without them we might be speaking German,

The US was not meaningfully involved in Europe until the Invasion of Italy.

Instead of trying to debate a World War that has been long over, why don't we get back to trashing those damn illegal wankers who are coming to the USA thinking they're entitled to everything and for all to be conveniently rearranged for them! Brits if you're living here or have current plans to move to the USA, you can join in on giving those Nancies a good f**king kicking too! :D

No thanks. I lived in California too long to have anything personally against illegal aliens.

I know someone who is illegal, has been for 2 years. he would have left tho, he wanted to, he felt guilty for overstaying, unfortunatly his passport expired, so now hes petrafied.

I have a big issue over illegal immigrants, especially since so many ppl doing it legal have such a hard time with it (babybunny and others), so i think it stinks all these ppl illegally here are not deported. I love my friend, id hate to see him deported, but on the other hand, im against illegal immigration.

Guess that makes me neutral :)

my point spoken in better words ....

many different countries, peoples, and geography played important roles

I agree, that anyone with the "'bend down and kiss our butts because we saved your a$$es in WWII' " attitude needs to have some "personal attitude adjustment"

If the US had not entered the war, the Uk would have sat tight and the Russian armies would have swept right up to the English channel...

That is why D day took place - to meet the Ruski as far East as possible and try and hold France and the low countries...

In the event the Ruskis swept past Berlin and right over to Bremen - it was close

Just think - the French would have been speaking Russian if it hadn't been for the US !

and the Dutch and the Belgians etc - the EEC would never have got going and 600 thousand poles would not have come to Britain last year

We could have gone across to calais for a tanker load of vodka for 5 roubles

US what were you thinking of !

just kidding - I really like poles
