I would hate to think that German would be today's official language of the UK if the USA didn't get involved in WWII and offer it's assistance to get the Nazis to back off from there. What do you think Charles? :D

The Battle of Britain had been fought and won before Pearl Harbor...before the US joined the war. The UK was in no serious danger of being taken over by the Nazis after that.

Fitting in doesn't mean making your own subculture in your country of destination. Fitting in means leaving your comfort zone to conform to the masses of your new locale. It's great to be proud of where you're from, but if you don't want to be an American when you sign your citizenship papers, why leave your homeland in the first place...Whether you like it or not, the official language in the states is English (oh wait right bastardised English wasn't it, my bad! *blink*)

The US doesn't have an official language.

Mmkay, the unofficial official language then? The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution weren't penned in *insert any other language here* I don't recall FDR saying "L'unica cosa che dobbiamo temere è timore" or Reagan saying "M. Gorbachev, enlèvent ce mur!" Maybe I missed that lesson...I guess I'll wait for the next State of the Union speech to see if we are addressed in Syrian Arabic. Nooo it'll be English, I'm fairly certain. ;)

Had a great time last night with the banter on this VJ topic - it was 2am when I went to bed and I usually go at 10.30 as my USC wife is an early to bed early to rise type.

Reading it all again this morning, I was impressed by the lack of swearing and references to botties - a lot of people made a lot of good points from both ends of the political spectrum and some from their very own perspective..

A few of my intended funnies like 'are you H-1b positive' fell like pearl before swine as the Americans are always so intense and earnest and take things at face value without trying to see if someone is being naughty for the sake of it... In a way, that child-like quality is quite reassuring

I intend to poke fun at the Americans and Brits and everyone else including myself when I arrive in Florida - I obviously need to do it at a low level though, as it could be dangerous when the place it littered with rabidly nationalistic (patriotic) armed people who take thing literally. It's an occupational hazard for a wind up artist.

eg my USC wife though I was being highly offensive when I greeted her in the morning with 'how ya doin' chunky'

'Chunky' is a term of endearment in my ethnic neck of the woods but she thought I was calling her short, fat and cube-like

So becoming familiar with each other's languages and ethnic weirdities (new English word) can only help us to get on better - yes learn spanish

I am not really going to withdraw the English language from the USA because of your misuse of it - and force you to speak Spanish - so please don't be too scared...and no , telling me to stay in England won't work either - you have rubbished your currency to such an extent that I am coming to a town near you to buy up one of those glorified wooden chicken sheds you call houses - built in the greco-roman style with fibre glass pillars and plastic eagles on the porch - and to spend all those cart loads of lovely cheap dollars you insist on selling me...

I might even put a US flag up with an eagle on the top to remind me of my old home in Europe (Well Nuremberg 1933 at least). We in Europe know all about massed huge flags with eagles on the top....

Come on America - relax and have a giggle - we are all going to die pretty soon whether the Mexies swim the river or not, so lighten up and don't feel so afraid of everything...the foreigners have got your number so puffing up the new Roman Empire thing doesn't work any more. The emperor has no clothes.

Yo Tex - we might end up friends after all !

Actually the Germans didn't stand much chance with the yookay as we had the largest navy in the word and an island to defend. The Russians were the true heros and stopped the nazis at Stalingrad and Kursk - they lost at least 20 million dead while the US/UK lost a few hundred thousand in the whole war between them and only made tentative moves to mop up a bit in 1944 after the Russians had broken the third reich in the 4 years previous.

Steve Mcqueen didn't really liberate Europe and Errol Flynn didn't force the Japanese out of Burma

The American troops (many of them married) spent most of their time pursuing married British women who's husbands were fighting in the jungles of the far east and then buying sex for nylon stockings once they got to an already broken Germany. Only last month we paid off the American war loan - there was no gift. However, we do have America to thank for briggs and stratton lawn mower engines which are excellent... toodle pip !

Alan, please keep posting in here - I think you caused some here to bust a few fuses in their circuitry. One thing this country is short of is thought provoking wit and humor.:yes:

The United States of America does not have an official language. The de facto 'official' language, the lingua franca if you will, of the US government is quite obviously English.

Just try looking it up next time before arguing, mmmkay?

I think you're going to be miserable in the US with that attitude.

Don't count on it.

You may find this shocking, but I also paid attention in history class.

I feel that more liberals support illegal immigration than conservatives. If I weren't so lazy I would start a poll here.

Well LuckyStrike, let this BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL start that poll for ya!

"Take your tequila drinkin', can't-show-up-to-work cuz estoy borracho, "nobodee wan to do dis yob", wife-back-in-mejico-con-los-ninos cheatin' ### and gtfo!

Fuera mi pais, ahora! Y no se revuelta!" (amwo sticks boot up Jose's ###)

NOW CALL THIS NAPPY HEADED WHITE B*TCH HO A RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And tomorrow I will be having dinner with my LEGAL Peruvian friends. My friend's mother is here visiting and is making REAL ceviche. I tried to get a Peruvian wine for the occasion but no luck so I am bringing a nice Spanish wine. Note: if this bill goes into law, he will not be able to petition for his mom to come here. Neither will any of us.

(Now we can begin to give the visas to the people who are truly in need, those who are religiously, economically and politically persecuted? Please?)

Not that this is related (and 14 pages have past hah, but I'm catching up) - your friend mother has to visit for real ceviche to be made? My husband is Peruvian, I'm not, but even *I* can make authentic Peruvian ceviche for a room full of Peruvians.

(PS if you can find Pisco-the national drink of Peru or something like that, that's FABULOUS. Super potent but goes well with ceviche. :))

And I totally agree with the visas for those who need them and the family unity concept which is being thrown out the window.

this is the way the world ends

this is the way the world ends

this is the way the world ends

not with a bang but a whimper
