We live in a global society, ...
But it's the jobs asking applicants to speak Spanish, not the immigrants....

Neither of these facts changes what I said: There's little choice of what that second language is that one needs to learn today in America. And this has far less to do with companies doing business overseas than it does with an ever growing workforce and customer base here in this country that is unable and unwilling to speak English. You can deny that all you want. Deep inside you know that's the case. If it was overseas business interest, we'd be learning Japanese, Chinese, German and maybe even French before learning Spanish. ;)

French = Freedom English

I've known him for 10 years. I don't really even notice his accent anymore. I'm not one of those Yanks who thinks English accents are sexy, though. Most of them sound coarse to me.

You are in a minority - I used to work out of Atlanta in the 80's and 90's and had to stop going as I felt exhausted like a red deer stag at the end of the rutting season.. and I have never been good looking

My pal stayed there to this day, and is still run off his feet with rampant Southern totty... he takes em off Frenchmen every time too

We digress - each to his own- ok are we going to let the Mexicans stay legally or illegally-either way they are staying and everyone knows it

Strangely enough, I think Bush might have something here which will achieve American objectives and sound good to the illegals whilst being a long term double - cross from which the guest workers don't get anything in the end ...The right wing should be for it

I should probably emphasize that I was kidding about the French.

I like France and the French. I speak French. I even have a degree in it.

Who was it that said 'She can speak 7 languages and can't say 'No' in any of em'

Meh *shrug* English accents don't blow my skirt up, never have done. Some of them are just downright icky. I was attracted to my husband for his brains, his sense of humor, and his sweet nature. His accent didn't have a thing to do with it.

Long as he doesn't show them his teeth, I bet. French accents don't do anything for me either; they're too cheesy.

I say throw 'em out. Throw out all the illegals, I don't care where they're from. Send 'em the eff home.

Your dad?

I suppose it has to do with what sector of industry you are looking at. Public services, retail stores, etc..for those yeah you are most likely right, I haven't investigated those kinds of jobs so I don't know what they ask as far as being bilingual or not, but I'm in travel (international) and for us it's for business sense. Also in Banking I have seen many jobs needing Spanish (not bank tellers though) and Electronics needing both Spanish and Japanese. In my office we also have some jobs where they need a Japanese or Chinese speaker as well. I wouldn't agree in the French and German so much being needed though as far as a global economy necessity. We actually have seen a lot of jobs pop up that want Portuguese as Brazil is becoming a very important market for U.S. trade. That's my next project....learn Portuguese... :)

i'll answer it for you pedroh. it's called ACCOMODATION. because they know someone will fall over themselves to accomodate them.

Portuguese is a really difficult language to learn because of all the bizarre subjunctive-flavored verb tenses they use. Just warnin' ya.

I say throw 'em out. Throw out all the illegals, I don't care where they're from. Send 'em the eff home.

That's the problem HA - your country is too weak to round them up - they line the streets in Vegas flicking their porno advert cards and the US is impotent...

Yes the mighty US can't look after Norleans or round up a few little guys with bandy legs on street corners or beat a country of 20 million like iraq

- the iraqis are outnumbered 20 to 1 by the US - no night goggles or satellites or drones or cruise missiles or helicopters or body armour etc etc and you still can't whup em

So the Mexicans are staying because the US cannot round em up ! That's why - you can't do it ! The manpower/butchpower resources would mean your taxes would go up and you wouldn't be able to afford that 500 horse power gadget for blowing leaves off your window sill or hurricane survival suite for your cat or other such stuff you want to buy on your creaking credit card this week!

it's a dilemma isn't it ? No a dilemma would imply the US has options - and it hasn't

AAARGGHHH YOU CAN'T ! you have to be a bleeding heart Liberal who wants to embrace everybody from everywhere- or a nazi right winger who wants to brand their foreheads with the fleur de lys and give them a dashed good flogging with the cat of nine tails before firing them over the river strapped to a cheap rocket!

That's politics- that is the world

There is only me who is allowed to pick and chose policies from everywhere and invent some of my own and have a political party of one !

Hey you get offa my cloud !

I blame the parents of the baby boomers for raising the spinless, gutless, spoiled, self-centered, elitist turds that are now running, ruining, and mismanaging this country as it has never been mismanaged and ruined before. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
