Bleh, Spanish isn't beautiful to me. Maybe that's because I understand it, but I understand Portuguese too and I think it's gorgeous. I was putty in those Brazilian boys' hands, I tell you. There were just too many of them at my university, they kept having to peel me off the ceiling.

I am sure there are plenty of Brazilians who want to be illegals too - nice to know they will be welcome...

We let pretty Pakistani girls in too without asking for visas

I think we have the makings of an immigration policy here...

I'm already married though. To an Englishman. :hehe:

I still can't understand why spanish is such a problem.. as giving away your American pride by learning spanish... what's the difference between learning spanish, or french, or Italian or Finnish? I really can't understand why people find spanish so offensive.... so insulting to them to learn such 'inferior' language.. I give all languages the same respect.. and.. also.. learning spanish doesn't mean kids can't learn other languages, like their house language...
I think it's the fact that Spanish is pushed on America. Other languages one learns by choice. That's the big difference. ;)
I think this "pushed on us" or "shoved in our faces" stuff doesn't make a lot of sense.
Really? Have you not noticed yet that more and more jobs require applicants to speak Spanish? The trend will continue. I have no problem with learning a second language; obviously not seeing that I am not a native English speaker but learned the language since I decided to live here. But this trend, to a large degree, really takes the choice out of what second language to learn. Hence, Spanish as a second language is pushed on America.

This is about the only thing I like about the immigration "reform" draft: The getting serious about making immigrants learn English part. As an immigrant, I thought of that as my natural obligation seeing that I chose America as my home. How arrogant of me it would have been to expect my then host country to cater to my communication preferences. ;)

the jobs that I've found spanish required are usually big bucks positions as supervisors or managers where a lot of hispanic labor is used.. like manufacturing plants.. again, the reward for learning spanish is not bad... although I agree with you that spanish rather than being offered as an advantage for people to learn, it's forced... although, as it was when the PC revolution started, not everybody could afford one, but the ones who were more familiar with them, got a competitive advantage.. same with spanish.. although it's more affordable than a PC.. but it's just a competitive advantage, the one who speaks it [spanish], is gonna have an advantage over a non-bilingual person

A person that doesn't speak Spanish is not necessarily a non-bilingual person. My wife and I bothg are bi-lingual with English being the only language we both speak and yet neither of us speaks a word of Spanish. Our daughter is being raised tri-lingual and there still ain't no Spanish in the mix.

although that doesn't mean that hispanic immigrants don't have to learn english.. I think bilingualism offers a lot of benefits for both americans and latino immigrants (in this case), than just get mad at each other for not knowing the other's language..

#######? Will folks in Mexico understand when I get mad for them not speaking German?

you don't know when you are well off - in my home town in the UK, the Muslims are asking for pork and booze free check outs in the supermarkets and for Muslim staff to be exempt from working those checkouts - how would you like that ?

alan

We have that already. Especially here in Minnesota.

If they brought that in at my supermarket, I'd change supermarkets.

Oh yeah, they don't have it yet, some Target workers had just wanted it. I think that's pretty ludicrous. I personally don't mind, but in principle, go get a different job. I don't see Amish asking to do jobs as engineers but to only have to use pen and paper.

hey, I'd be ok with a sexy-accent visa. ;)

There are probably speech therapists who can help him get rid of the accent. There's no shame in it; I knew lots of kids growing up whose parents sent them to speech therapists (in Dallas) to get rid of their strong New York accents.

I know you said that just for me- he's got a lovely accent if he's a brummy - but saying 'West Midlands ' means he's probably in denial.

Having the same accent as George Bush - now that's a handicap and a case for urgent speech therapy....

perhaps it's YOUR accent that needs some therapitude with a speech improvamentor ?

No leave him and his lovely accent alone - you just want to make him less attractive to other women.

This thread now makes me chuckle, it's gotten so far beyond this bill its comical.

No-one can really claim its about race, even though Mexicans are singled out, its more than that, no-ones scared of these illegals, so its not xenophobic, liberal and republican? heads and tails, different sides of the same count, they say whatever gets more votes for them.

Save your rage and get back to the core issues which are families getting ###### over by this bill.

My parents live in a heavily Jewish area of Dallas, and their local supermarket has a separate kosher butcher, separate kosher section for frozen food, separate kosher aisle for non-perishables, and they have people come by every morning to inspect the kosherness of it all. Even in THAT supermarket, they do not have a separate kosher checkout.

If Jewish people who are so orthodox that they have four separate sets of dishes, two dishwashers, two refrigerators, etc. are cool with me having just been through the same checkout with some sausages and bacon and jello and lobster and a whole load of other ####### that they think is trayfe, then I think it's sort of obvious that the Muslims are being political. They're just seeing how far they can push us, then when we push back...we're racist.    What's funny is we actually fall for it.

He's from Warwickshire. He doesn't sound like Ozzy Osbourne.

Dubya's accent is fake.

I don't have an accent.

I've known him for 10 years. I don't really even notice his accent anymore. I'm not one of those Yanks who thinks English accents are sexy, though. Most of them sound coarse to me.

MLK Jr. and Gandhi were dangerous thinkers, weren't they, Gary?

Gandhi was about fighting invaders. So are we. MLK was about exercising for rights gained as American citizens. So are we. Both would be anti-illegals.

Gandhi was about a lot more than fighting invaders. Yes, he played a pivotal role in the withdrawal of British personnel from the Indian subcontinent. But he did a lot more than that. In the middle of Partition, he was also one of lone voices on the Indian side who said India should be open to anyone, even Muslims who lived in what was to become Pakistan. He believed anyone who believed in India could be Indian, regardless of faith. This was a stark contrast to other Hindu and Muslim leaders who felt that Muslims did not belong in India and Hindus did not belong in Pakistan. Today, an extremely small number of Hindus remain in Pakistan and a very large number of Muslims remain in India. Guess who's vision won?

The vision of the just.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Hee hee...hmm...maybe I SHOULD send him to a speech therapist!! I don't want other women hitting on my man!!! He gets enough side glances as it is, without him opening his mouth and talking...It will probably get less heavy with time...but I LOOOVEEE accents, Spanish, British, Cockney, Brazilian doesn't matter. I like to listen to Dirk Nowitzki talk in press conferences because his German accent is so cute when it comes out ;)

(BTW, a Cockney accent is a British accent.)

We live in a global society, ...
But it's the jobs asking applicants to speak Spanish, not the immigrants....

Neither of these facts changes what I said: There's little choice of what that second language is that one needs to learn today in America. And this has far less to do with companies doing business overseas than it does with an ever growing workforce and customer base here in this country that is unable and unwilling to speak English. You can deny that all you want. Deep inside you know that's the case. If it was overseas business interest, we'd be learning Japanese, Chinese, German and maybe even French before learning Spanish. ;)
