Letter affirming desire to marry for K1...

In the K-1 Guide section it states that I need this for the interview:

"Send an original letter affirming your desire to marry your fiance(e) and your continued support of the K-1 Visa. Sign and date the form. This will be similar to the letter you provided with the I-129F, but dated much closer to the interview (it will have most likely been several months since you submitted your I-129F)."

My lawyer is claiming this isn't necessary. Anybody not do this and still be ok? My poor fiance has already signed a zillion things and mailed them, so if we didn't have to do this that would be great. Obviously if its needed thats fine.

Any experiences from you all would be great!

Thanks,

Laura

Morning,

My advice is to provide one signed.

I have found that too much paperwork is not a bad thing. If they do not require it, then things can continue, if they do and you do not provide one, then this will just further slow down the process. I did provide one for my fiance and initial package, and so far I have not hit any road blocks.

Good luck.

wow, we have already recieved our Biometrics appointments. It is only 2 1/2 weeks away.

It seems to be moving rather quickly.

This is great.

Laura,

Your lawyer may be right - the consulate didn't ask to see it from us - but we had it nonetheless. We did it - it was simple, took maybe 5 minutes and we didn't have to wonder "did I need that?" when the interview came.

As a good practice, take what you find here on VJ and combine it with what your lawyer says and you should be OK. There are many things people have learned and posted here that may not be 'required', but ends up making the processing better/faster/or more acceptable.

Duh, he's Cdn and worth that extra fee!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

i was wondering this very same thing... but i am also wondering, is this what they mean when they indicate "evidence of engagement" on the DS-230? is anything else required for this? i have a copy of the receipt for my engagement ring - and obviously i'm wearing it - but i'd like to know in advance if anything more is required.

thx!

First contact: Oct 14/06

Andrea K - I thought evidence of engagement was like "proof of relationship" which would be pictures, letters, phone records, etc. Can anyone else clarify?

Also.... Can any of you who answered saying they wrote the letter tell me what they included?? Thanks

I was thinking it should have:

* Yes, still wanting to marry me :) (of course)

* Date of wedding

* When we have seen each other/relationship since the last letter

Anything else??

Sorry, Andrea K, but I don't recall being asked to show "evidence of engagement". You may be thinking of "evidence of mutual intent" which was requested on Form I-129F. The types of things we included were:

- 2 pictures (1 of our engagement night)

- an engagement congratulations card sent to me by his parents

- letters from a couple of the church services we attended while visiting each other (if you sign the guest book they send you an acknowledgement letter)

Also.... Can any of you who answered saying they wrote the letter tell me what they included?? Thanks

We basically reiterated that we still intended to marry and that we knew of no reason as to why we could not lawfully marry. It was short and sweet and to the point.

We basically reiterated that we still intended to marry and that we knew of no reason as to why we could not lawfully marry. It was short and sweet and to the point.

For the OP: I went back and looked at the documentation I received from Montreal -- on my packet 4 (interview date) letter, they specifically stated the following: "You must have a letter signed by your US citizen fiance(e) stating that he/she is still free and willing to marry you upon your entry into the United States." They even underlined it for extra reinforcement. So we prepared another one. It was pretty simple, that Jerry was still free and very willing to marry me. :)

I also went back and looked at the form DS-156K, it does specifically state to have evidence of engagement. I took the following with me to the interview:

--receipt from the purchase of my engagement ring

--receipt from the purchase of our wedding rings

--pictures from our wedding shower in Canada, which Jerry and his parents were able to attend

--emails from my mom and his mom planning the whole wedding shower surprise

--"Congratulations on your engagement" emails and cards from family and friends

--other cards and mail from Jerry's family to me

I wasn't asked to show a scrap of it. :P

*Cheryl -- Nova Scotia ....... Jerry -- Oklahoma*

We just changed the date on the original letter of intent that we sent in with the I-129F! I think it's a good idea to send, just to confirm that you're still committed at the last date of the letter. (Especially since your last letter might have gone in with the application months and months ago).
